Wildcats Complete Perfect Weekend With 3-1 Win Over Penn State Altoona

Daemen Goes Undefeated During Wells College Classic Tournament

AURORA, N.Y. - The Daemen College men's volleyball team completed a perfect weekend and ran its winning streak to five-straight matches by posting a 3-1 (25-17, 25-21, 21-25, 25-21) victory over Penn State Altoona here today during second-day action of the Wells College Classic Tournament.

Daemen, a NCAA Division II independent, has now won eight of its last 10 matches and improved to 8-5 on the year. Penn State Altoona, a member of NCAA Division III and the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC), dropped to 5-6 with the loss.

Daemen posted wins over SUNY Potsdam (3-0) and tournament host Wells (3-2) during the opening round Friday night. Wells entered the weekend ranked sixth in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association Division III national poll.

IMPACT PLAYERS

  • Freshman Zach Schneider (Lockport N.Y.) equaled his season-high with 19 kills and also totaled two aces and four digs. He has now posted double-digit kills in four straight matches.
  • Graduate student Zach Yerington (Hamburg, N.Y.), sophomore Kyle Kon (Oswego, N.Y.) and redshirt sophomore Brandon Casterline (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) all finished with seven kills for the Wildcats, who posted a 55-35 advantage in kills for the match.
  • Freshman Gavin Musielak (Eden, N.Y.) posted a team-high 34 assists for the Wildcats, which marks the second time this season he has reached 30 or more assists in a match.
  • Sophomore Ben Beaver paced the Lions with 13 kills, while senior Frank Perehinec added 10 kills and 10 digs. Freshman Tyler Sheaffer dished out 28 assists and registered eight digs.

MATCH NOTES

  • Today's match marked the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
  • Daemen has already posted more wins this season than it did in its inaguarlai season last year. The Wildcats fielded a roster entirely of first-year college players last spring and closed out the year with a 6-17 record.
  • The Wildcats boast a 17-man roster this year, essentially doubling the amount of available bodies from a year ago. The roster includes eight returners and nine newcomers.
  • Penn State Altoona returns 10 players from last year's team that went 13-15 overall and 5-9 in the AMCC.
  • Sophomore Michael Krueger (Canonsburg, Pa.) totaled 12 assists today and now stands 17 assists shy of 1,000 for his career.

Daemen is idle until Feb. 23 when it travels to Medaille College for a tri-match. The Wildcats will face Medaille and Elmira College.
