Daemen Splits 4 Matches To Open Florida Tournament

2/7/2020 4:17:00 PM

ORLANDO, Fla. - The Daemen College women's bowling team opened their first-ever trip to the Sunshine State by splitting four matches today at the Wildcat Classic. The three-day tournament is being hosted by Bethune-Cookman University. Today's matches were played under Baker total pinfall rules.

Daemen, led by second-year head coach Carrie Racsumberger, got off to a fast start by scoring wins over tournament host BCU (811-622) and Tusculum University (856-810). They dropped consecutive matches to a pair of nationally-ranked opponents to close the day, falling to Tulane University (996-797) and Stephen F. Austin University (951-831). Tulane is ranked No. 16 and Stephen F. Austin is ranked No. 8 in the National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA) poll. The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks are the defending national champions.

Despite the loss to Stephen F. Austin, Daemen rolled its highest single game of the day (219) against the Lumberjacks. The lineup of Christina Aldridge (Webster, N.Y.), Katlyn Newberry (Rochester, N.Y.), Caitlyn Nowak (West Seneca, N.Y.), Alex Syrotynksi (East Greenbush, N.Y.) and Katie Good (Hamburg, N.Y.) achieved the feat.

Newberry was in the lineup for both Daemen wins early in the day. She was joined by Syrotynski, Alex Hasiotis (Rochester, N.Y.), Adrianna Pencek (Dunkirk, N.Y.) and Paige Bartosz (West Seneca, N.Y.) in the defeat of Bethune-Cookman. Hasiotis, Pencek, Nowak and Bartosz also contributed to the win over Tusculum.

Today's results push Daemen's record to 34-28 this season. They stand one win shy of matching the program record for victories in a season which was established during the 2017-18 campaign.

Tournament play will resume at 8:25 a.m. Saturday with five traditional total pinfall matches on the slate. Daemen will take on Florida A&M University, No. 15 Maryville University, Medaille College, No. 22 University of Alabama-Birmingham and No. 19 Sacred Heart University.
