Wildcats Fall At Ball State

Daemen Suffers Fourth Loss Against Division I Opponent This Season

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Daemen College men's volleyball team's first win against a Division I opponent will have to wait for another day as the Wildcats fell 3-0 tonight against Ball State University at Worthen Arena.

Ball State, which competes in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association, ran its winning streak to four-straight games, improving to 7-3 this season. On the flip side, Division II independent Daemen dropped to 3-5 this season. Four of Daemen's five losses this season have come against Division I opponents.

IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Matt Szews (12 kills), Kaleb Jenness (11 kills) and Blake Reardon (10 kills) all contributed to the Cardinal offense, combining for 33 of the team's 40 kills. All three players attacked at .250 or better, led by Jenness' .286.
  • The Cardinals also received a combined 29 assists from setters Courtland Scharenborg (14 assists) and Quinn Isaacson (15 assists).
  • Daemen was led by outside hitters Zach Schneider (Lockport, N.Y.) and Zach Yerington (Hamburg, N.Y.) who totaled nine and seven kills, respectively.
  • Sophomore setter Michael Krueger (Canonsburg, Pa.) recorded a match-high 21 assists and added seven digs for the Wildcats.

SET-BY-SET SUMMARY
Set One (BSU 25, DC 18) - The hosts jumped out quickly, establishing a 10-3 lead before Daemen could muster consecutive points. Reardon notched a pair of kills and a service ace in the set-opening run. The Cardinal lead would grow to 24-14 following a block by Isaacson. Daemen rattled off four-straight points to make ita respectable difference before Szews ended the set with a kill for BSU.

Set Two (BSU 25, DC 20) - Daemen grabbed an early 2-1 lead, but the Cardinals created some separation with a 13-6 spurt. Daemen scratched within 16-12 on a kill by Yerington, and later at 24-20 following a BSU hitting error, but could get not closer. Szews came up with another set-ending kill for the hosts.

Set Three (BSU 29, DC 27) - The teams went back and forth early in the third set until Daemen embarked on a 16-5 run, turning a 6-3 deficit into a 19-11 lead. Yerington and sophomore outside hitter Kyle Kon (Oswego, N.Y.) keyed the run with multiple kills. Later, a Schneider kill made it 24-19 in favor of Daemen, putting the Wildcats on the precipice of taking the set. But the Cardinals rallied for five-straight points, aided by four Daemen hitting errors, to even the score at 24-24. The Cardinals grabbed the lead at 26-25 on a kill by Szews, but Daemen came back with two-straight points, including a kill from Jahari Winkfield (Oswego, Ill.). The final rally went the way of the hosts as BSU scored three-straight points to take the set and the match. Scharenborg's service ace closed it out.
