Wildcat Win Streak Reaches Double Figures

Daemen Completes Sweep Of Weekend Road Trip With 70-51 Defeat Of Queens, Clinch ECC Tournament Berth

FLUSHING, N.Y. - The wins keep piling up for the Daemen College women's basketball team as they made it a clean sweep of this weekend's road trip by defeating Queens College 70-51 in East Coast Conference action at Fitzgerald Gymnasium today.

Now winners of 10-straight games, Daemen improved to 18-3 overall and 10-1 in conference play. It marks the second-straight season that Daemen has embarked on a winning streak that reached double-figure games. The Wildcats won 11-straight games during January and February of last season - the longest winning streak of the program's NCAA Division II era (2015-present). Daemen remains in second place in the ECC standings, one game back of conference-unbeaten St. Thomas Aquinas College (18-3, 10-0 ECC). Today's win clinches Daemen's berth in the upcoming ECC Championships.

Queens, which was coming off a blowout victory (82-53) over Roberts Wesleyan College on Friday night, dropped to 7-14 overall and 4-7 in ECC games. The Knights had won six of their last 12 games before today.

IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Daemen's five starters combined for 67 of their 70 points. The Wildcats were led by redshirt junior guard Tiara Filbert (Batavia, N.Y.) and junior forward Caroline White (Fairport, N.Y.) who shared game-high honors with 19 points apiece. Filbert added game-highs in rebounds (nine) and assists (six), and White hauled in eight rebounds as well. Both players went the distance, playing the full 40 minutes.
  • Jordan Heinold (Hamburg, N.Y.) and Katie Titus (Penfield, N.Y.) also reached double figures, scoring 11 and 10 points, respectively. Heinold accounted for three of Daemen's six three-pointers, extending her personal streak of consecutive games with a triple to 13. Titus matched Filbert's game-high rebounding total with nine and added three steals.
  • The Wildcats also got eight points, four assists and four steals from Ashli Jeune (Westampton, N.J.).
  • ECC Rookie of the Year candidate Raiana Brown paced the Knights with 14 points and six boards. Harmony Philo (13 points) and Lucy Tougas (11 points, six assists) chipped in as well.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Wildcats and Knights traded barbs over the first several minutes of the opening quarter, until a short jumper by Filbert put the guests ahead 11-10. It ended up being the game's final lead change.
  • After taking a 16-12 lead into the second quarter, Daemen's defense stiffened. Queens was limited to just 3-for-14 shooting (21.4%) in the second quarter, and Daemen took advantage. The Wildcats closed the quarter on a 10-3 spurt that spanned just over four minutes, turning their 22-19 lead into a 10-point bulge (32-22) at the break. Heinold drilled a pair of three-pointers in the run.
  • The Wildcats kept the Knights at bay through the opening minutes of the third quarter, until a Philo three-pointer cut the deficit to 38-31 with 5:10 to go in the stanza. Daemen was again resolute, outscoring Queens 13-6 and holding them to a single field goal to take a 51-37 lead into the final frame.
  • Queens cut the deficit to nine points several times in the fourth, including on an inside bucket from Brown at the 55:56 mark. Daemen responded with a decisive 10-2 spurt that put them ahead 65-48 with under three minutes to play. Reserve guard Autumn Buchsenschutz (Port Allegany, Pa.) sparked the run with a three-pointer from the right wing. The Knights got as close 14 points down the stretch, but back-to-back scores from Titus provided the widest and final margin of the contest.
  • The Wildcats shot just 36 percent from the field (23-for-64) and 22 percent from three-point range (6-for-27), but held big advantages in points off turnovers (19-6), second chance poitns (15-2) and points in the paint (34-16).
