Daemen Student-Athletes Post Record Academic Stats 6/5/2020 1:55:00 PM By: By Mike Miranto, Sr. Associate A.D. for External Operations & Communications AMHERST, N.Y. - Not even a mid-semester transition to completely online learning due to a global pandemic could slow down the academic progress of Daemen College's more than 200 student-athletes. The Daemen student-athlete body put up record academic numbers during the Spring 2020 semester, achieving a collective grade point average (GPA) of 3.41 - the highest such GPA since the tracking of academic stats became commonplace several years ago. It marks the 14th consecutive semester that student-athlete semester GPA has been 3.0 or higher, and the performance was up sharply from the 3.11 collective GPA posted during the Fall 2019 semester. A record 14 student-athletes representing 12 different teams achieved a perfect 4.0 GPA for the semester. Teams with 4.0 student-athletes include cheerleading, men's soccer, men's cross country/track and field, men's volleyball, women's basketball, women's bowling, women's cross country/track and field, women's soccer, women's triathlon and women's volleyball.  A total of 159 student-athletes individually achieved a GPA of 3.0 or higher during the semester. That represents 77 percent of Daemen's total student-athlete body. In addition, 104 student-athletes (50% of total) achieved a semester GPA of 3.50 or higher. At the conclusion of the Spring 2020 semester, 147 student-athletes (71% of total) now hold a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.  Also, for the first time, 100 percent of the college's intercollegiate athletic teams held GPAs of 3.0 or better... women's bowling (3.70) women's triathlon (3.69) women's volleyball (3.64) men's tennis (3.61) women's cross country (3.49) women's track & field (3.48) women's soccer (3.48) women's basketball (3.46) men's soccer (3.40) men's volleyball (3.36) women's tennis (3.30) cheerleading (3.24) men's cross country (3.22) men's track & field (3.14) men's basketball (3.00) "The spring 2020 semester obviously brought forth some unprecedented circumstances. As we've seen so often in their chosen athletic pursuits, our student-athletes were poised to adapt and overcome any and all obstacles that stood between them and academic success. To have every team above a 3.0, a record number of individuals with a 4.0 and a record collective GPA for the semester are tremendous accomplishments. It is also a testament to the work of our dedicated faculty and staff who were undeterred in providing first rate instruction, academic coaching and advisement despite the pandemic," said Traci Murphy, director of athletics.  Daemen College features the only NCAA Division II athletics program in the Buffalo-Niagara region, sponsoring 17 intercollegiate teams.
