Women's Volleyball Announces Team Leadership Council

Seniors Greenwood, Heritz & Wicker To Serve As Team Captains

9/16/2020 2:00:00 PM

AMHERST, N.Y. - Seniors Ali Greenwood (North Aurora, Ill.), Jenn Heritz (Granger, Ind.) and Georgia Wicker (Woodstock, Ill.) have been named captains of the Daemen College women's volleyball team for the 2020-21 academic year, head coach Stephanie Albano announced today.

"We went through a new process for choosing team captains this year," said Albano, the program's leader since 2016. "In January we met as a team and each team member could nominate up to three of their teammates. Players that were nominated received a job description and an invitation to interview for the position. After the interview process we named captains. Ali, Jenn and Georgia are all exceptional leaders for our team. They earned their positions by demonstrating consistency, a strong work ethic and drive to make themselves and their teammates better. As seniors, they know the expectation level and are great ambassadors for our program."

The trio of captains bring valuable experience within the program to the captaincy. All three have been on-court contributors dating back to the 2017 season with nearly 900 combined sets played. In that time they've helped the Wildcats to 48 wins as well as the 2018 East Coast Conference regular season and tournament championships and the program's second NCAA tournament berth.

Greenwood has been a consistent performer while establishing herself as one of the top defensive players in the ECC. The 2018 team MVP, Greenwood has been a four-time ECC Defensive Player of the Week while appearing in 83 matches and totaling 1,146 digs in her career. She's finished third among the ECC leaders in digs per set during each of the last two seasons.

Heritz has appeared in 75 matches and put down 580 kills. She rebounded from an injury-hampered sophomore campaign to earn Second Team All-ECC honors last fall when she became the first player since Ye Wang in 2013 to lead the team in both kills (241) and blocks (50). Heritz was named the team MVP following her freshman season, a campaign that also brought a pair of ECC Rookie of the Week accolades.

Wicker has been the consummate team player throughout her career. With Albano looking to diversify the team's offensive attack late in 2018, Wicker, a defensive specialist by trade, took on the challenge of playing setter in a 6-2 system. She responded with double figure assists in the final seven matches of the season, including 31 in a key conference tournament win over Bridgeport. A one-time ECC Rookie of the Week as a freshman, Wicker has gone on to appear in 87 matches and total 405 assists and 974 digs in her career to date.
