Filbert Named ECC Player of the Week

1/18/2021 3:10:00 PM

AMHERST, N.Y. - Redshirt senior guard Tiara Filbert (Batavia, N.Y.) of Daemen College has been named the East Coast Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week for games played January 11-17. The official announcement was made in the league's weekly sport report which was released this afternoon.

Filbert picks up the third ECC Player of the Week honor of her career after leading No. 20 Daemen to an impressive 82-64 victory over previously unbeaten Mercyhurst (5-1) this past Saturday - Daemen's first game action in some 314 days due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Filbert scored a game-high 20 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field. She was also perfect from the free throw line (5-for-5) and shared game-high honors with three assists.

It was a milestone afternoon for the veteran guard as well. With 5:26 to play in the second quarter, Filbert was fouled on a three-point attempt and headed to the charity stripe where her second free throw was the 1,000th point of her career. Filbert became the 25th player in the modern history of the program (1986-present) to reach the milestone, and the first since Leah McDonell in 2017. In 86 career games, Filbert, who was also named the ECC Preseason Player of the Year earlier this month, has totaled 1,010 points to rank 23rd on the program's all-time scoring list.

All three of Filbert's ECC Player of the Week awards have some since the start of the 2019-20 season. A Daemen player has collected an ECC weekly award (Player of the Week, Defensive Player of the Week, Rookie of the Week) in 10 of the last 15 possible weeks dating back to November 2019.

Filbert and the Wildcats return to action this week with a pair of contests against ECC newcomer D'Youville. The Wildcats will make the short trek to D'Youville's College Center Gymnasium for a 6 p.m. tip-off this Friday (Jan. 22) before hosting the Saints at Lumsden Gymnasium for a 12 p.m. Sunday (Jan. 24) matinee.
