Another Successful Academic Semester For Daemen Student-Athletes 1/27/2021 11:30:00 AM By: CONTACT: Mike Miranto, Sr. Associate A.D. for External Operations & Communications | (716) 839-8385 | mmiranto@daemen.edu AMHERST, N.Y. - Undeterred by the circumstances of a global pandemic, Daemen College student-athletes continued to get the job done in the classroom during the Fall 2020 semester, recording a collective 3.25 grade point average (GPA). It marks the 15th consecutive semester that student-athletes have achieved a 3.0 GPA or higher, and the second-highest GPA since recording academic stats became commonplace for the Division of Athletics several years ago. "I would like to take this opportunity to commend our student-athletes who found a way to work through the obstacles and challenges that last semester put in front of them," said Traci Murphy, director of athletics. "Their collective performance in the classroom has me believing they are defeating COVID-19 in a whole different way, and they continue to make us proud. It's evident that our student-athletes are resilient and they understand how and when to ask for help, and that they are making the most of the resources at their disposal." Murphy continued, "I would be remiss if I didn't also acknowledge the work of our academic support services, as well as the college's faculty and information technology professionals. We shouldn't forget that while it was challenging for the students to navigate a new normal, it was equally as challenging on these talented professionals to provide the kind of educational experience that Daemen is so well known for. The achievements of our student-athletes would not have been possible without the dedication of so many people on our campus." The academic performance includes a record 16 student-athletes who achieved a perfect 4.0 GPA for the semester. Those with perfect semesters are from a broad cross section of the student-athlete body with 11 of Daemen's 15 intercollegiate athletic programs represented. Teams with 4.0 student-athletes include cheerleading, women's basketball, women's bowling, women's cross country, women's soccer, women's track and field, women's volleyball, men's cross country, men's soccer, men's track and field and men's volleyball. A total of 155 student-athletes individually achieved a GPA of 3.0 or higher during the semester. That represents 73% of Daemen's total student-athlete body. In addition, 88 student-athletes (41% of total) achieved a semester GPA of 3.50 or higher. At the conclusion of the Fall 2020 semester, 157 student-athletes (73% of total) now hold a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, including six with a 4.0. Also, 14 of the college's intercollegiate athletic programs achieved a GPA of 3.0 or better: men's tennis (3.50) women's bowling (3.48) women's volleyball (3.46) women's basketball (3.42) men's volleyball (3.37) women's cross country (3.30) men's cross country (3.29) women's soccer (3.29) women's triathlon (3.27) women's track and field (3.24) men's soccer (3.16) men's track and field (3.09) women's tennis (3.05) men's basketball (3.00) Daemen College features the premier NCAA Division II athletics program in the Buffalo-Niagara region, sponsoring 17 intercollegiate teams.
