HOME SWEET HOME Daemen's first homestand of the 2021 season continues Saturday afternoon as the Wildcats take on St. Rose in a non-conference contest beginning at 3 p.m. Lumsden Gymnasium will also serve as the site for a neutral site contest between St. Rose and D'Youville beginning at 1 p.m. The Wildcats will enter Saturday's contest with an 8-6 overall record. Daemen has won four of their last five matches, and is 22-9 at home since the start of the 2018 season. They'll be looking to remain unbeaten in the all-time series with St. Rose. Saturday's contest marks the fifth meeting between the Wildcats and Golden Knights, and the first since 2018. 2. BAKER'S DOZEN The Wildcats opened the homestand Thursday evening with a 3-1 victory over long-time rival Roberts Wesleyan to remain unbeaten in East Coast Conference play (3-0). It also marked Daemen's 13th consecutive win over the Redhawks in a series that's come to be dubbed the Thruway Rivalry. The Redhawks had no answer for the combination of junior outside hitter Maggie Burns and graduate right side Caitlyn Meyer who combined for 30 kills and a .509 hitting percentage. The Wildcats tallied at least 12 kills in all four sets, finishing with 67 in the match, compared to just 34 for the Redhawks. 3. SO HOT IT BURNS Maggie Burns has been on fire of late for the Wildcats. She tallied a career-high 16 kills in Sunday's four-set loss to Southern Connecticut State, and matched that total in Thursday's win over Roberts Wesleyan. Over the last five matches, Burns has recorded at least eight kills four times. She's averaging 3.50 kills per set and hitting .270 in that five-match span, helping the Wildcats to four victories. For the season, Burns has produced 85 kills and is one of four Daemen players averaging at least 2.30 kills per set. 4. DOUBLE-DOUBLE YOUR DELIGHTMENT Sophomore Olivia Alessi continues to be a double-double machine for the Wildcats. Seeing time at both setter and libero over the last few weeks, Alessi has eight double-doubles in the last 10 matches, averaging 8.59 assists and 3.00 digs per set in that span. Alessi, who was named the ECC Setter of the Week for Sept. 6-12, is one of only four players in the ECC to be averaging at least 8 assists and 2.50 digs per set this season. She ranks fourth among the ECC leaders in assists per set (8.45). Her 140 digs are second on the team; only sophomore Jasmine Brundage (208) has more digs so far this season. 5. The Golden Knights were limited to just two matches (both losses) during the 2020-21 academic year, and have gotten off to a 4-8 start this season. They play at Roberts Wesleyan this evening and against D'Youville tomorrow afternoon before their meeting with the Wildcats. The St. Rose roster includes seven returning players, including setter Valeria Jorge and setter/defensive specialist Allison Sellers who each appeared in 100 sets during the 2019 season.
