Columbia UDCW (10-0) Winner Match Recap: Women's Tennis | 10/29/2021 12:42:00 PM Women's Tennis Fall Season Ends At ECC Semifinals Wildcats fall to top-seeded District of Columbia FLUSHING, N.Y. - The Daemen women's tennis team saw their fall season come to an end today following a 4-0 loss to top-seeded District of Columbia in the semifinal round of the East Coast Conference Championship tournament played at the Queens College Tennis Center. Daemen dropped to 4-7 on the season. The Wildcats had earned the tournament's No. 4 seed following their 7-0 victory over crosstown rival D'Youville earlier this week, finishing the conference slate with a 2-3 mark. UDC remained unbeaten (10-0) on the season, while picking up their second win over Daemen in the last eight days. The Wildcats and Firebirds met in Washington, D.C. on October 22 with the hosts earning a 7-0 win. Eight of UDC's 10 victories have been shutouts as fellow ECC tournament participants St. Thomas Aquinas and Queens (N.Y.) remain the only opponents to score points against the Firebirds. UDC opened the match with a pair of wins to secure the doubles point. Mariona Franco and Claudia Bahamon were 6-0 winners on the third doubles court, followed by a 6-2 win from the Firebirds' second doubles pair of Laura Marie and Joanna Skrzypczynska. With the doubles point decided, the first doubles match featuring Daemen's Frida Rubio (San Diego, Calif.) and Kitsa Scime (Williamsville, N.Y.) against UDC's Simone Parn and Sofia Bellucco was left unfinished with the Wildcats trailing 4-3. The Firebirds managed to lock up the match with wins in the fourth, fifth and sixth singles positions. Marie opened the singles scoring with a 6-0, 6-1 win on the fifth singles court, and Skrzypczynska followed suit shortly thereafter on the fourth singles court, winning 6-0, 6-0. Valentina Brienza's 6-0, 6-0 win on the sixth singles court clinched the match for the Firebirds. With the dual match fully decided, the first, second and third singles matches were left unfinished. Rubio was down a set to Parn (6-3, 2-1) on the top court; Scime was battling against Franco (5-4) on the second court; and Yinett Del Leon (Cape Coral, Fla.) was up 3-1 in the second set after dropping the first set 6-0 to Bellucco on the third court, when play was suspended. UDC moves on to tomorrow's final round where they'll meet the winner of today's second semifinal between second-seeded STAC and third-seeded Queens. Daemen was making their second consecutive appearance in the conference tournament. The Wildcats qualified for the first time last season when they also bowed out in the opening round. Daemen's 2021-22 season will continue during the Spring 2022 semester. The team's spring schedule will be announced at a later date.
