Wildcats Suffer 6-1 Setback To Spartans

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. - Playing their second match in as many days against one of last season's East Coast Conference Championship finalists, the Daemen women's tennis team battled but ultimately fell 6-1 to the visiting St. Thomas Aquinas Spartans this evening at Miller Tennis Center.

Daemen, which opened conference play with a 6-1 win last Sunday at Molloy, dropped to 3-4 overall and 1-2 in conference play with the loss. The Wildcats were coming off a 6-1 setback to defending conference champions Queens in match played late Friday.

STAC ran their winning streak to four and improved to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in the conference.

The teams opened the match by splitting the first two doubles contests. Jemima Parkinson and Ayesha Burnett picked up a 6-0 win on the third doubles court, but that as quickly matched by the Wildcats. Daemen's Frida Rubio (San Diego, Calif.) and Christina Stasiuk (Bowmansville, N.Y.) earned their own 6-0 win on the first doubles court, besting STAC's Karina Blas and Vera Gak Anagrova.

That left the doubles point up for grabs and dependent on the outcome of the match on the second doubles court. In a competitive affair, STAC secured a 6-4 win by Samanta Villegas Robles and Elita Silins to clinch the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead in the match.

In singles play, STAC rattled off wins on the first, fourth, fifth and singles courts to seal the dual match victory. Blas (first singles; 6-3, 6-2) and Silins (fourth singles; 6-0, 6-1) each earned their second wins of the day, while additional wins came from Giovanna Jallas (fifth singles; 6-0, 6-0) and Gak Anagrova (sixth singles; 6-0, 6-0).

Daemen got on the board when Stasiuk outlasted Viktoriia Pavlovets in three-set affair on the second singles court. Staisuk dropped the opening set, but came back to win 2-6 ,6-4, 1-0 thanks to 10-8 advantage in the third set tiebreaker.

Another ultra competitive match was played on the third singles court where Villegas Robles emerged victorious over Scime, 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7). It was the third time in the last four matches that Scime has gone to three sets. She was coming off a 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8) victory over Queens' Mariana Ling.

With a win in both singles and doubles play tonight, Stasiuk continues her ascent up the Wildcats' all-time wins list. The grad student now has 76 combined singles/doubles wins in her career. She's now eight wins shy of tying Gretchen Ringler for second in program history. She's also now tied with Ringler for second on the program's all-time singles wins list with 43.

Rubio also moved into a tie for 10th on the combined singles/doubles wins list. She now has 23 combined wins in her brief two-year career.

Daemen returns to action next Saturday, October 16 when they host cross-town rival D'Youville in their penultimate conference match of the season.
