DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. - The nationally-ranked Daemen College women's basketball team remained unbeaten in East Coast Conference play following an 86-54 victory over Mercy College this afternoon at Victory Gym on the Mercy campus. Daemen improved to 8-1 overall and 6-0 in ECC play, while Mercy dropped to 0-4 overall and 0-4 in the league.
Daemen entered the game ranked in both Division II national polls—a first for the Wildcats during their NCAA Division II era (2015—present). The Wildcats sit at No. 13 in this week's Division II Sports Information Directors of America (D2SIDA) media poll, and also come in at No. 17 in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Division II top 25 coaches poll.
IMPACT PLAYERS
- Five players scored in double figures for the Wildcats, led by junior Mickayla Ivy (Grand Rapids, Mich.) who scored 15 points after halftime and finished with 17 points and six rebounds in just 18 minutes of action. She connected on 7-of-9 shots and also handed out two assists.
- Freshman guard Alahna Paige (Rochester, N.Y.) scored in double figures for the second-straight game and finished with a season-high 13 points. She was good on 3-of-4 from three-point land and made 5-of-6 shots overall. The rookie also totaled five assists, a season-high three steals and three rebounds.
- Junior forward Katie Titus (Penfield, N.Y.) played just 21 minutes, but still managed to contribute 12 points, seven rebounds, three blocks and three steals.
- Senior Caroline White (Fairport, N.Y.) scored all of her 11 points in the first half and also added seven rebounds and three assists. She recorded her 900th career point and her 500th career rebound during the game and has now totaled 901 points and 504 rebounds in 90 career games.
- Sophomore forward Marina Maerkl (Binghamton, N.Y.) made the most of her 12 minutes of action, as she scored a career-high 10 points and also grabbed five rebounds.
- Mercy was paced by sophomore guard Katie Wall who drilled two three-pointers and totaled 16 points and five rebounds.
QUARTER-BY-QUARTER SUMMARY
First Quarter (Daemen 24, Mercy 11) - Daemen scored the first six points of the game and the Wildcats later took their first double digit lead of the game, 20-8, after Paige swished a corner three-pointer with just under two minutes to play in the quarter. Another three-pointer by Paige with 28 seconds left in the frame closed out the scoring and Daemen took a 24-11 lead into the second quarter.
Second Quarter (Daemen 20, Mercy 10) - The Wildcats scored the first seven points of the second quarter and the visitors opened up a 20-point lead, 31-11, after redshirt Alina Estrella (Brooklyn, N.Y.) canned a triple just two minutes into the quarter. The Daemen lead was 16 points, 35-19, midway through the quarter and the Wildcats outscored the Mavericks 9-2 down the stretch to take a 44-21 lead into halftime.
Third Quarter (Daemen 21, Mercy 14) - Much like the first two quarters, Daemen scored the first six points in the third quarter and took a 50-21 lead after Titus fed Ivy for an uncontested layup just 2:09 into the frame. The teams traded baskets for the next three minutes and the Daemen lead was 28 points, 59-31, when the Wildcats scored the next six points to take a 65-31 lead. The visitors would take a 65-35 lead into the final quarter.
Fourth Quarter (Daemen 21, Mercy 19) - Daemen built the lead back up to 35 points, 77-42, after Paige drilled her third triple of the game at the 6:20 mark and the Mavericks came no closer than 30 points down the stretch.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Daemen shot 57-percent (8-for-14) from the field during the first quarter and shot a season-high 52-percent (33-of-64) from the field overall. The Wildcats made 6-of-26 three-pointers and converted 14-of-19 from the charity stripe.
- Mercy shot just 28-percent (8-for-28) in the first half and finished 20-for-55 (36%) from the field overall. The hosts made 4-of-15 from long range and went 10-for-18 from the free throw line.
- Daemen finished with a commanding 45-29 edge in total rebounds. The visitors also forced 19 turnovers, which resulted in a 28-11 edge in points off turnovers. Daemen also finished with an 18-5 edge in second chance points and a 52-26 advantage in points in the paint.
GAME NOTES
- Daemen is coming off an impressive 2019-20 campaign. The Wildcats finished 23-5 last year, claimed their first-ever ECC tournament title and earned their first-ever selection to the NCAA Division II Championship.
- Daemen was without the services of redshirt senior Tiara Filbert (Batavia, N.Y.) due to injury. The ECC Preseason Player of the Year, she is averaging 13.3 points per game this season and ranks 20th among Daemen's all-time leading scorers with 1,096 points in 93 career games.
- Titus has totaled a team-high 20 blocks this season and has become the 11th player in program history to record 100 career rejections. She ranks ninth in career blocks at Daemen with 107.
- The Wildcats are off to a 8-1 start for the first time during their NCAA Division II era (2015-present). The last time they opened the year 8-1 was the 2012-13 season.
- Daemen has now prevailed in the last 10 meetings between the two teams and the Wildcats now own a 13-2 lead in the all-time series.
- Daemen has held seven of its nine opponents to less than 40-percent shooting from the field and has forced 15 or more turnovers in eight of the nine games.
- The Wildcats have now won 23 of their last 26 games dating back to last season, and 45 of their last 53 games dating back to the 2018-19 season.
- Daemen has held 31 of its last 37 opponents to 65 points or fewer, posting a 29-2 record in those contests.
- Daemen returns seven players, including incumbent starters Filbert, White and Titus, from their 2019-20 team that went 23-5 overall and earned the program's first NCAA tournament berth.
