AMHERST, N.Y. - Daemen College scored the first 11 points of the game and never trailed after that en route to a 70-48 victory over rival Roberts Wesleyan College in women's basketball action tonight at Lumsden Gymnasium on the Daemen campus. Daemen improved to 5-1 overall and remained unbeaten in East Coast Conference play (3-0). It marked the ECC opener for Roberts Wesleyan, which dropped to 2-3 overall.
Daemen entered the game ranked in both Division II national polls—a first for the Wildcats during their NCAA Division II era (2015—present). The Wildcats sit at No. 14 in this week's Division II Sports Information Directors of America (D2SIDA) media poll, and also come in at No. 18 in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Division II top 25 coaches poll. It marks the first time that Daemen has been included in the WBCA top 25 coaches poll.
IMPACT PLAYERS
- Junior forward Mickayla Ivy (Grand Rapids, Mich.) turned in the most impressive game of her three-year career, as she posted her first career double-double and finished with a career-high 21 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. She connected on 9-of-13 shots and also collected three steals. She scored 14 of her 21 points after halftime and grabbed nine of Daemen's 12 offensive rebounds in the game. Ivy's previous career-high for points was 10, which she posted during an 80-48 win at Roberts Wesleyan last year.
- Senior Caroline White (Fairport, N.Y.) scored 15 first-half points and finished with 19 points and seven rebounds.
- Daemen's top two leading scorers were limited to a combined 11 points tonight, as redshirt senior Tiara Filbert (Batavia, N.Y.) netted eight points and junior forward Katie Titus (Penfield, N.Y.) contributed three. Titus entered the game averaging a team-high 19.6 points, while Filbert was contributing 14.6 points per game.
- Senior Autumn Buchsenschutz (Port Allegany, Pa.) added eight points, two assists and two steals for the hosts, while freshman Natalie Angeletti (Panama, N.Y.) chipped in five points.
- Roberts Wesleyan was paced by junior forward Dimitra Gkizani who totaled 10 points, five rebounds and two blocks. Freshman guard Georgia Haverlock added seven points and two assists.
QUARTER-BY-QUARTER SUMMARY
First Quarter (Daemen 18, Roberts Wesleyan 8) - Daemen opened the scoring with a three-pointer by Titus just 33 seconds into the contest and later took an 11-0 lead after White drilled a triple with 3:48 left in the frame. The Redhawks were off target on their first eight shots in the game before a three-pointer by freshman Toni Neely-Primus with 3:29 remaining got the visitors on the scoreboard. Another RWC three-pointer cut the Daemen lead to five points (11-6), but the hosts closed out the frame with a 7-2 run over the final two minutes and the Wildcats took an 18-8 lead into the second quarter.
Second Quarter (Daemen 22, Roberts Wesleyan 13) - Daemen opened the second quarter with another 7-2 spurt that allowed the hosts to increase their lead to 15 points, 25-10. Ivy scored four points during the run and her layup with 7:53 left in the frame capped the rally. The teams traded buckets for the next five minutes and the Daemen lead was 13 points, 31-18, with just over two minutes left before halftime when the Wildcats got back-to-back three-pointers from Angeletti and Buchsenschutz. The hosts would take a 40-21 lead into the break after White drilled her second three-pointer of the half with 12 seconds left in the quarter.
Third Quarter (Daemen 21, Roberts Wesleyan 11) - Daemen secured the win in the third quarter, as the Wildcats out scored the Redhawks 11-5 over the first five minutes of the frame. A three pointer by Buchsenschutz capped the early run and gave the hosts a 51-26 lead. Ivy then accounted for six points during an 8-0 run that upped the lead to 33 points, 59-26. The hosts took a 61-32 lead into the break.
Fourth Quarter (Roberts Wesleyan 16, Daemen 9) - The Wildcats connected on just 4-of-13 shots in the fourth quarter, but the Redhawks would come no closer than 22 points down the stretch.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The game was decided during the second and third quarters, when Daemen shot 15-of-32 (47%) from the field and outscored the Redhawks 43-24. The Wildcats finished the game 24-for-60 (40%) from the field overall and 6-of-16 from the three-point line. The hosts connected on 16-of-18 free throws.
- Roberts Wesleyan connected on just 17-of-58 (29%) shots overall and made just 4-of-18 from long range. The Redhawks canned 10-of-17 from the charity stripe.
- Daemen finished with a commanding 45-33 edge in total rebounds. The hosts also posted an edge in points off turnovers (18-13), points in the paint (28-16) and second chance points (14-2).
GAME NOTES
- Daemen is coming off an impressive 2019-20 campaign. The Wildcats finished 23-5 last year, claimed their first-ever ECC tournament title and earned their first-ever selection to the NCAA Division II Championship. Daemen returns seven letter-winners, including incumbent starters Filbert, White and Titus, from their 2019-20 team.
- The Wildcats are off to a 5-1 start for the second-straight season.
- Daemen has now prevailed in the last five meetings between the two long-time rivals and the Wildcats now own a 45-24 lead in the all-time series.
- Daemen has held Roberts Wesleyan to less than 50 points in each of the last three meetings.
- The Wildcats have now won 20 of their 23 games dating back to last season, and 42 of their last 50 games dating back to the 2018-19 season.
- Daemen has held 28 of its last 34 opponents to 65 points or fewer, posting a 26-2 record in those contests.
