ROCHESTER, N.Y. - After going 509 days between victories, the Daemen women's volleyball team earned their second road win in less than 48 hours, defeating host Roberts Wesleyan 3-0 (25-18, 25-11, 25-19) this afternoon at the Voller Athletic Center. It also marked Daemen's 11th consecutive victory over the Redhawks - their longest active winning streak against any single opponent.
The Wildcats, who earned their first win of the season with a 3-0 dispatching of D'Youville on Thursday night, improved their record to 2-3 this season. Daemen's 2020 season was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and today's match marked the fifth of eight on their abbreviated spring schedule.
The Redhawks, who were coming off a 3-1 exhibition victory over Division III Rochester last evening, dropped to 1-1 on the season.
Trailing 11-9 in the opening set, the Wildcats seized control with a 12-2 run. Sam Logan (Eden, N.Y.), Shelby Kersten (Alden, N.Y.) and Jenn Heritz (Granger, Ind.) keyed the Daemen spurt, putting down two kills apiece. The Redhawks closed an eight-point deficit to 22-17, but Daemen took three of the final points in the set, including a clinching kill from newcomer Jordan Martin (Fort Wayne, Ind.).
Logan, Maggie Burns (Louisville, Ky.) and Loren Alberts (Huntley, Ill.) all recorded multiple kills as the Wildcats opened up a 16-5 advantage to the start the second set. The lead ballooned to 21-7 on a kill by senior Tirzah Peters (Amherst, N.Y.) and the Wildcats cruised to a 14-point win, hitting .609 with 17 kills and just three errors in the set.
The Redhawks regrouped and brought more back-and-forth to the third set. With RWC leading 12-11, Daemen rattled off six straight points in the set's most decisive run. Logan, the Daemen server on five points in the run, recorded a kill in the spurt, as did Heritz, Burns and Alberts. Roberts pulled within 18-15 following a Daemen attack error, but the Wildcats responded with a Heritz kill and a service ace by freshman Jasmine Brundage (East Aurora, N.Y.). The teams traded points until Heritz powered down a final kill to close the set and the match.
Daemen enjoyed its most productive offensive match of the season, averaging 16.7 kills per set on a .355 hitting percentage. The Wildcats totaled 50 kills while limiting the Redhawks to just 18 and a .085 hitting percentage.
