BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, N.Y. – A chance at perfection.
That's what the Daemen men's volleyball team guaranteed itself today by winning a four-set match (25-15, 25-23, 21-25, 25-12) over host St. Francis Brooklyn to improve to 9-0 this season. The same two teams will meet again tomorrow in what will be Daemen's final match of the pandemic-shortened 2021 campaign. The Wildcats remain one of only two unbeaten teams across the NCAA Division I/II ranks, joining the No. 1 ranked team in the country, Hawaii (9-0).
Friday's win marked the second against a Division I opponent in the three-year history of Daemen's program. Both have come against the SFBC Terriers. The teams last met March 7, 2020 at Daemen's Lumsden Gymnasium in a 3-0 victory for the Wildcats - the final match before both teams had the remainder of their 2020 seasons cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Terriers, who just opened their 2021 season Tuesday by splitting a pair of matches with Sacred Heart, dropped to 1-2. The SFBC program is in just its second season of existence.
Despite experiencing travel issues that caused the start of the match to be delayed by an hour, Daemen showed no signs of stiffness after a 10-hour bus ride. The Wildcats opened up a 12-4 advantage and cruised to a 10-point win in the opening set.
The Terriers tightened things up in the second set and led 21-20 before Daemen rattled off five of the final eight points in the set.
SFBC turned the tables in the third set, turning a 18-13 deficit into their first set victory of the match. The Terriers won 12 of the final 15 points of the set to pull back into contention.
Daemen quickly extinguished any thoughts of a big SFBC comeback by jumping out to a commanding 17-9 lead in the fourth set. The Terriers got not closer than seven points the remainder of the set.

- The Wildcats current 11-match winning streak surpasses the prior program record of seven consecutive wins set last season. All seven wins came during the month of February (2020). Daemen has won 18 of its last 20 matches.
