Women's Tennis Falls In Regular Season Finale

Wildcats Set Sights On First-Ever Conference Tournament Appearance Friday

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. - Freshman Frida Rubio (San Diego, Calif.) earned her seventh singles win of the season, but it wasn't enough to lift Daemen past St. Thomas Aquinas in East Coast Conference women's tennis action this afternoon. The visiting Spartans took a 6-1 victory in the regular season finale for both squads played at the Williamsville South High School courts.

With the win, STAC improved to 9-1 overall and 5-1 in ECC matches, clinching a bye into the final round of this weekend's conference tournament.

Daemen, which was coming off of back-to-back wins over ECC newcomer D'Youville this past weekend, dropped to 5-4 overall and 3-2 in conference play. The Wildcats will head to the ECC Championship for the first time in program history and will meet Queens (N.Y.) at 11 a.m. this Friday, April 30 for the right to face STAC in the finals. The entire conference tournament is being held at the Queens College Tennis Center.

Rubio's victory in first singles came against STAC sophomore Viktoriia Pavlovets, outlasting the Russian native 6-5, 7-6. It was just the sixth singles loss of the season for STAC (49-5 singles record coming into today). Rubio has now won a team-best three straight singles matches and is tied with senior Christina Stasiuk (Bowmansville, N.Y.) and sophomore Mackenzie Schayes (Honeoye Falls, N.Y.) for the team lead with a 7-2 singles record this season.

STAC opened a 1-0 lead in the match after sweeping through doubles play. The Spartans overcame early deficits on both the first and second doubles courts, getting wins from Karina Blas and Samanta Villegas Robles (6-4 first doubles) and from Pavlovets and Jemima Parkinson (7-5 second doubles). The win at first doubles clinched the point for the Spartans after Dauphine Donker and Flamina Maria Valci were 6-2 winners in third doubles to start things off.

The Spartans managed singles wins in positions two through six. A 6-1, 6-3 win in fifth singles by Brooke Lopez clinched the overall dual match victory for the Spartans.
