BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – The Daemen University women's volleyball team closed out the 2022 regular season with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-23) non-league victory at the University of Bridgeport this afternoon.
Daemen, a member of the East Coast Conference, rans its winning streak to five-straight matches and capped the regular season with an 18-5 record. Bridgeport of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference fell to 13-18.
IMPACT PLAYERS
- Outside hitter Maggie Burns (Louisville, Ky.) reached double digits in kills for the seventh-straight match and the 13th time this season. The senior posted a team-high 33 attacks and registered 10 kills. She also contributed six digs.
- Graduate student Sam Logan (Eden, N.Y.) finished with seven kills and seven digs.
- Sophomore Kate Ryan (Buffalo, N.Y.) added seven kills, two service aces and two blocks, while junior Vanessa Kuliga (Glenview, Ill.) chipped in six kills, a .357 hitting percentage, two aces, four digs and two blocks.
- Junior setter Dunja Masic (McHenry, Ill.) dished out a team-high 24 assists and also added eight digs. Junior Jasmine Brundage (East Aurora, N.Y.) registered a team-high 18 digs for the visitors.
- The host Purple Knights were led by sophomore Paola Henandez who totaled nine kills and nine digs. Sophomore Jaden Drollinger handed out a game-high 27 assists for the Purple Knights.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Daemen held a 14-9 lead in set one, when the Wildcats took control with four unanswered points, all of which came as a result of a UB error. Daemen held a 24-18 lead when the hosts mounted a late rally and cut the lead to two, 24-22. The Wildcats then secured the set with a kill by junior Vanessa Kuliga (Glenview, Ill.).
- Set two was a back-and-forth affair and the set was tied at 17-17 when the Wildcats put together a 5-0 run. UB scored the next point, but Daemen followed with three straight points to take the 25-18 win.
- Much like set two, the teams traded points for most of set three until the Wildcats opened up a 20-14 lead following three unanswered points. Bridgeport responded with an 8-2 run that gave the hosts a 23-22 lead, but Daemen regrouped following a timeout and closed out the set and match with three straight points.
GAME NOTES
- Logan will enter the post season 36 kills shy of becoming the 10th player in program history to total 1,000 career kills.
- Brundage recorded her 800th career dig today and has now totaled 803 digs in 57 career matches.
- Bridgeport is a former ECC member and today's match marked the 21st all-time meeting between the two schools. Daemen has prevailed in the last five meetings and the Wildcats own a 11-10 advantage in the all-time series.
UP NEXT
The Wildcats are the top seed and will host the ECC Tournament for the second-straight year. Semifinal round games will be played Friday (Nov. 11) at Lumsden Gym. Daemen will face fourth-seeded Mercy at 5 p.m., before third-seeded Molloy and second-seeded Queens square off at 7:30 p.m. The two semifinal winners will meet Saturday for the ECC Tournament title and an automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Tournament.
