Men's Volleyball Cruises To Fourth Straight Win

Wildcats down visiting American International, sweep season series with Yellow Jackets

AMHERST, N.Y. - A match-opening 12-1 run set the tone as the Daemen men's volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 win (25-7, 25-13, 25-17) over the visiting American International Yellow Jackets this afternoon at Lumsden Gymnasium. The Wildcats never trailed and dispatched of their guests in just over an hour. 

Daemen has won four straight matches, improving to 6-2 this season. The Wildcats have won 25 of their last 29 matches dating back to February 2020.

AIC, which is competing in its inaugural season, saw its record fall to 1-5. The Yellow Jackets were coming off the first win in program history - a 3-0 defeat of Division III Sage last weekend. 

Daemen put down 10 kills without an error in the opening set, jumping out to a 22-4 lead before AIC even knew what hit them. The Wildcats went on to open up leads of 17-7 (second set) and 15-7 (third set) and were never seriously threatened in the match. 

Daemen finished with 33 kills on a .400 hitting percentage. AIC managed just 12 kills and committed 17 hitting errors (-.082). It marks the sixth time in Daemen's program history that they've forced an opponent into more errors than kills. 

IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Four Daemen players contributed at least six kills, led by junior outside hitter Parker Wade (Portland, Ore.) who put down a season-high seven to go with three digs.
  • Sophomore opposite Cameron Milligan (Pavilion, N.Y.) tallied six kills and tied the program record for service aces in a match with five. He added a match-high two solo blocks.
  • Junior outside hitter Ryan Parker (Fairport, N.Y.) had a fine all-around match with six kills, four aces and a match-high 10 digs. 
  • Senior middle Henry Moffitt (Sydney, Australia) notched six kills on just 11 swings. 
  • Junior setter Gavin Musielak (Eden, N.Y.) ran the Wildcat offense and finished with a match-high 25 assists.
  • Junior outside hitter Matthew Garry (Depew, N.Y.) chipped in four kills, three digs and a solo block.  
  • John Rivera Ortiz, Alex Marinaro and Ben Warren tallied three kills apiece for the Yellow Jackets. 

GAME NOTES
  • Both Daemen and AIC compete as independent members of NCAA Division I-II. 
  • The Wildcats return 12 players from their 2021 team which finished with a 10-0 record - the only NCAA Division I-II team without a loss. 
  • Today's win gives Daemen a sweep of the season series with AIC. Daemen defeated the Yellow Jackets also in three sets in their season opener on Jan. 21.
  • Today's match was the fifth in Daemen's nine-match home stand - the longest in program history. The Wildcats are 4-1 at home this season and have won nine of their last 10 at Lumsden Gymnasium dating back to March 2020.
  • Daemen is now 14-9 all-time and have won seven straight matches against NCAA Division II opponents.
  • Daemen totaled 11 service aces today, outscoring AIC by nine points from the service line. The Wildcats entered the match averaging 2.24 service aces per set, second in the country behind only Hawaii (2.65).
  • Daemen played without starters Michael Krueger (Canonsburg, Pa.) and Jake Couzens (Hamburg, N.Y.) who continue to work their way back from injuries. Additionally, key contributors Zach Schneider (Lockport, N.Y.) and Robert Patzer (Liverpool, N.Y.) started today's match but saw limited action.
