AMHERST, N.Y. - Seinor Katie Titus (Penfield, N.Y.) of Daemen College has been named the NCAA Division II Conference Commissioner's Association (D2 CCA) Women's Basketball East Region Player of the Year as well as to the All-East Region First Team. Titus becomes the first player in program history to be selected as the top player in the region, which includes teams from the East Coast Conference, Northeast-10 Conference and Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference. Voting for the awards was conducted by the region's sports information directors.
Averaging an ECC-best 19.9 points along with 7.7 rebounds per game, Titus has been the catalyst behind another successful season for the Wildcats. The 6-foot forward has led Daemen to a 20-4 overall record, conference regular season and tournament championships and the program's third consecutive NCAA tournament berth. The Wildcats are the No. 8 seed in this week's NCAA Division II East Regional with a quarterfinal-round contest Friday (Mar. 11) against top-seeded Southern New Hampshire.
Titus has reached double-figure scoring in 22 of 24 games this season and will enter NCAA tournament play ranked 13th among the Division II national leaders and second among the East Region leaders in points per game. Titus, who also ranks second in the region for free throw percentage (90.3), has done much of her offensive work from behind the three-point line where she's made a team-high 58 shots. One of 24 players in the East Region with at least 50 three-point field goals, she's the only one to be shooting at least 33% from downtown and 45% from the field overall.
Named the ECC Player of the Year and to the All-ECC First Team for the third time in her career last week, Titus has been a five-time ECC Player of the Week selection this season. She has authored five 30-point games, including in a December victory over Bridgeport when she netted a career-high 38 points on 15-of-22 shooting. In a late season ECC showdown with second-place Molloy, Titus canned 14-of-23 shots, including 7-of-9 from three-point range, and finished with 37 points to help the Wildcats clinch their third straight regular season conference title.
After dealing with foul trouble throughout much of Daemen's ECC Championship semifinal victory over rival Roberts Wesleyan, Titus contributed 15 points and 11 rebounds in their final round defeat of Molloy. It marked her seventh double-double of the season and the 24th of her career. Her old-fashioned three-point play at the 2:41 mark of the fourth quarter sparked a game-ending 11-4 run after Molloy erased a 17-point deficit to knot the game at 63-63.
It has also been a milestone-filled season for Titus who became the 27th member of Daemen's 1,000 point club during a November victory over Angelo State. In 97 career games, she has made 87 starts and totaled 1,436 points and 758 rebounds. She ranks eighth in points, 10th in rebounds, third in three-point field goals (188) and seventh in blocked shots (154) among Daemen's all-time career leaders. Titus is the first player in program history with at least 1,400 points, 750 rebounds, 150 blocks and 150 three-point field goals. She also is the program's all-time leader in free throw percentage (85.9).
Titus, who was named an honorable mention All-American last season by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), is the second Daemen player to earn D2 CCA All-East Region honors. She joins Sarah Saba who was named to the D2 CCA All-East Region First Team in 2018, following her senior season. There was no D2 CCA All-Region awards for the 2020-21 season due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Titus was joined on the All-East Region First Team by Jess Huber of USciences, Kayla Raymond of Stonehill, Lauren Schetter of Pace and Peyton Steinman of Saint Anselm. The five first-team selections will move on for consideration for the 2022 D2 CCA Women's Basketball All-America Team which will be announced prior to NCAA Division II Elite Eight.
The All-East Region Second Team selections include Gabriela Aspuru of Molloy, Autumn Ceppi of Bentley, Anyssa Fields of Georgian Court, Meg Knollmeyer of Southern New Hampshire and Briana Lee of Felician.
