HOME, SWEET HOME
The Daemen University women's basketball team returns to Lumsden Gymnasium on Wednesday evening with a midweek matchup against longtime rival Roberts Wesleyan for the battle of I-90. The Wildcats come into the game on a two-game win streak and with a 9-2 overall record and 4-1 record in East Coast Conference play. The Redhawks are on a four-game losing streak and come into Wednesday with a 2-10 record and 1-4 in ECC games. This will be the 77th all-time game between Daemen and Roberts Wesleyan, with the Wildcats owning a four-game win streak over Roberts and the 51-25 overall record.
LOOK BACK AT LAST WEEK
Daemen got back in the win column last week with a pair of victories. The Wildcats closed out their non-conference slate with a 63-48 win over St. Michaels' on Monday, while Daemen finished the game 23-of-60 (38-percent) from the field and made 10-of-18 three's (56-percent). The Cats returned to ECC play on Friday, topping Staten Island 64-45. Marina Maerkl (Binghampton, N.Y.) totaling 10 points in the game. Daemen rounded out their non-conference play with a 5-1 record, marking their highest number of non-conference victories since the 2019-20 season when the Wildcats finished 8-2 against non-ECC opponents.
NATIONALLY RANKED STATS
Throughout the season, guard
Paige Emborsky has been ranked as one of the top three-point shooters in the country, and she currently leads the nation in all of Division II in three-point percentage with 61.5-percent on the year. Emborsky leads the Wildcats in shooting, draining 32 of 52 three's on the year while shooting 54-percent from the field (45-of-83). As a team, the Wildcats rank seventh in the nation in scoring defense, allowing their opponents to score an average of 53.6 points per game.
HOT CATS
A few Wildcats have put up some big numbers over the last four games. Freshman forward
Claire Pikett (Holland, N.Y.) is averaging 16 minutes per game over the last four games, and scored an average of 4.25 ppg to total 17 points out of 35 total points on the season. Pikett has recorded multiple rebounds in each game (3.25 rebounds per game). Since the Wildcats played at Mercy on Dec. 11, junior guard
Alahna Paige (Rochester, N.Y.) has tallied 11 of her season total 16 steals, including totaling a season-high four steals per game in games against St. Anselm and Staten Island. Ivy has posted her only two double-digit point games against Staten Island and St. Anselm, totaling 35-percent of her entire season scoring in just those two games.
POLL POSITION
After last week's pair of wins over St. Michael's and Staten Island, the Wildcats remain ranked fourth in the East Region in the latest Division II Sports Directors of America (D2SIDA) Women's Basketball Regional Rankings, and are receiving votes in the D2SIDA National Poll. Daemen has been ranked in 42 straight regional polls dating back to early January 2019.
UP NEXT
Wednesday's game will be the Wildcats' final home game in the month of January. Daemen will be on the road for their next four games, starting with a short trek across town to D'Youville on Tuesday, Jan. 17 before the Wildcats take a trip to the nation's capitol to play at District of Columbia on Saturday, Jan. 21.
SCOUTING THE ROBERTS WESLEYAN REDHAWKS
Coming into Wednesday on a four-game losing streak, Roberts Wesleyan has had a tough first half of the 2022-23 season. Four of their losses came from games that were within 10 points, including an eight-point loss to Mercy on Friday night and a nine point loss to regionally-ranked St. Thomas Aquinas on Sunday.
