ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. – After a two-game skid, the Daemen University women's basketball team got back on track in the East Coast Conference with a 69-40 win over Molloy on Friday night. The Wildcats move to 11-4 overall and 6-3 in ECC play on the year, while the Lions drop to 3-16 and a 2-8 conference record.
Daemen led for the entire game after Molloy scored the game-opening bucket, and shot 41-percent from the field (26-of-64) and 38-percent from beyond the arc (9-of-24). The Daemen defense gave up the least amount of points on the year, holding the Lions to just 40 points. Molloy shot just 22-percent from the field and 11-percent for three. Alahna Paige (Rochester, N.Y.) leading the way with 14 points, and fifth-year forward
Mickayla Ivy (Grand Rapids, Mich.) scoring 10 points on the day.
The Wildcats continue their trek downstate with a Sunday matchup against Queens. Tip-off is set for 3:30 PM in Flushing, N.Y.
IMPACT PLAYERS
- Alahna Paige shot 67-percent both from the field (4-of-6) and beyond the arc (4-of-6) and drained 2-of-2 from the stripe for a team-high 14 points. The guard added a team-high four assists and two rebounds to her stat line.
- Mickayla Ivy scored in the double-digits for the fourth time this season, knocking down 4-of-8 from the field and 2-of-2 from the free throw line. She finished with five rebounds, three assists and a block with her 10 points.
- Freshman guard Shyla Montgomery (Brockton, Mass.) totaled a career-high 7 steals on the day, setting a Daemen program record in the NCAA era for most steals. She was the first player with at least seven steals in a game since Samantha Stanfield had nine vs. Georgetown College on Dec. 16, 2012. Montgomery set her previous high of four steals against the Lions in the first matchup of the season on Dec. 2.
- Redshirt junior guard Alina Estrella (Brooklyn, N.Y.) saw extensive playing time tonight, totaling 18 minutes and pulling down a career-high eight rebounds while adding three steals, two assists and two points on the day.
- Molloy's Gianni Domond totaled 12 points to lead the Lions, and Samantha Muller finished with 10 points as the only other Lion players to score double-digit points in the matchup.
GAME NOTES
- Daemen won their seventh straight game against Molloy in a win streak that dates back to March 8, 2020 when they topped the Lions in the ECC Championship game to win their first ever ECC Tournament title.
- The Wildcats outscored the Lions in every single quarter of play today.
- Molloy scored the first basket of the game, but then the Wildcats went on an 11-2 run in the first. Daemen led the Lions 17-10 at the end of the quarter thanks to two Daemen buckets in the final minute. The Wildcats shot 47-percent (8-of-17) from the field with one three-point field goal from junior guard Kaytlyn Matz (Johnsburg, Ill.) in the quarter.
- After a scoreless first, Paige banked back-to-back three-pointers in the second to lift the Cats up by 14-points and started the Wildcats double-digit lead over the Lions.
- Daemen headed into the half with a 36-22 lead after knocking down 4-of-7 (57-percent) from beyond the arc and going 6-of-14 (43-percent) from the field to outscore Molloy 19-12 in the second.
- The Lions out-rebounded Daemen 23 to 15 in the first 20 minutes of play and pulled down an impressive 10 first-half offensive boards compared to just five for the Wildcats.
- Freshman forward Claire Pikett (Holland, N.Y.) totaled three first-half blocks, marking more blocks in the first two quarters than she totaled in 13 of 14 games on the season.
- Daemen took a 22-point lead over Molloy heading into the final quarter with a 55-33 advantage.
- Emborsky scored eight points in the third quarter off two three-point field goals and a layup.
- Three Wildcats totaled nine points in the matchup. Graduate student Paige Emborsky (Newfane, N.Y.), junior guard Gabby McDuffie (Buffalo, N.Y.) and junior forward Natalie Angeletti (Panama, N.Y.) combined for 27 of Daemen's 69 total points on the day.
- Daemen totaled 22 fast-break points, and held Molloy to zero.
