Women's Volleyball Falls To Gannon In Five-Set Thriller

ERIE, PA – Playing in their final non-conference match of the season, the Daemen University women's volleyball team kept it interesting until the very last point, falling 3-2 (25-22, 26-24, 19-25, 16-25, 17-15) in a five-set thriller to the Gannon Golden Knights on Wednesday evening. Tonight's loss snaps Daemen's nine-match win streak and moves the Wildcats to 16-5 on the year. Gannon improves to a 15-3 record overall in their final non-conference match.
 
The Golden Knights Gannon's AVCA All-American outside hitter Journey Blevins led all players on the night with 18 kills. Three Wildcats finished with double digit kills as Daemen out-hit Gannon 64 to 52 tonight.
 
IMPACT PLAYERS
  • After picking up her fourth East Coast Conference Rookie of the Week honor of the season on Monday, freshman outside hitter Charlotte Koerber (Munich, Germany) posted her 10th double-double of the year, leading the Wildcats with 17 kills (3.4 kills/set) and a season-high 17 digs, while adding an ace for a team-high 18 points.
  • Named the ECC Player of the Week for the second straight week, fifth year senior outside hitter Maggie Burns (Louisville, Ky.) earned her 1,000th career dig in tonight's match! She posted her sixth double-double of the season with a 14-kill, 15 dig performance and added two solo blocks and an assist.
  • Senior right side Giselle Giraud (Orlando, Fla.) tallied 13 kills for a .321 hitting percentage along with a team-high three solo blocks, one assist and one dig on the day.
  • Senior setter Dunja Masic (McHenry, Ill.) posted 51 assists (10.2 assists/set), nine digs, three aces, and two kills.
  • Senior libero Jasmine Brundage (East Aurora, N.Y.) led all players with 24 digs (4.8 digs/set), six assists and an ace on the day.
  • The middle blocker duo of Amelia Armstrong (River Falls, Wisc.) and Vanessa Kuliga (Glenview, Ill.) combined for 18 kills. Kuliga posted two solo blocks and a block assist, while Armstrong finished with two assisted blocks. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Golden Knights jumped out to an early advantage, leading the Wildcats by as much as 13-7 in the first. From there, Daemen went on a 12-3 run to take a three-point lead. The Wildcats held on despite a late Gannon comeback to take the first, 25-22 after totaling 14 kills for a .355 hitting percentage. Kuliga led all hitters in the set with 5 kills.
  • Daemen was the one that jumped out to an early lead in the second with a 12-6 advantage. The Wildcats led 21-14, but Gannon put together an 8-2 run to bring the match to 23-22. This one went to extra points, but the Wildcats won the final three points to take the second set 26-24. Burns totaled six kills, and Koerber finished with five second set kills, including the set winner.
  • The teams traded points to open up the third, but after Daemen tied the match up at 12, Gannon went on a 6-1 run to take an 18-13 lead. Making yet another late comeback, the Wildcats brought the game within two after a pair of Burns kills and errors from the Knights, but Gannon won six of the last seven points to take the third, 25-19 to force a fourth set.
  • The Knights sent this match to a fifth set after winning the fourth 25-16. Daemen had 13 attack errors in the set.
  • Gannon opened the fifth set on a 5-1 run, but after taking a 10-2 lead, it was the Wildcats that scraped together a comeback to bring the match within two points. Daemen tied this match up at 15, but the Golden Knights ended it with the final two points of the match. 
GAME NOTES
  • After tallying her 1,000th career dig tonight, Burns continues the hunt for 1,000 career kills. With tonight's 14-kill performance, the fifth-year senior moves to 970 total kills over her five-year career, including her one season spent at Urbana University.
  • After getting a handle on their errors over the last few matches, Daemen committed 35 attack errors, along with 14 service errors in the match.
UP NEXT
The Wildcats return to Lumsden Gymnasium this weekend for a pair of ECC matches. Daemen will play Mercy in a noon match on Saturday, then host St. Thomas Aquinas for the first time on Sunday at 11 AM.
