CHAMPIONS!! Women's Volleyball Wins Third Straight ECC Tournament Title

AMHERST, N.Y. – GOING DANCING!! For the third consecutive season, the Daemen University women's volleyball team are East Coast Conference Tournament champions!! The top-seeded Wildcats topped second-seed Molloy University 3-0 (25-15, 28-26, 25-23) in the ECC Tournament finale for the second season in a row on Saturday evening to punch their ticket to the NCAA Division II Championship tournament for the third straight season and fifth appearance all-time. With the win, the Wildcats move to 24-5 on the season.
Daemen University wins the 2023 ECC Women's Volleyball Championship defeating Molloy University 3-0 on Saturday, November 18, 2023 at Lumsden Gym in Daemen University.  
First Team All-ECC fifth-year senior Maggie Burns (Louisville, Ky.) was named the 2023 ECC Tournament MVP after totaling 19 kills and 26 digs over the tournament. 
 
The Wildcats out-killed the Lions 48 to 41 on the day and finished with a .274 hitting percentage in the match while adding eight total blocks in the victory. ECC Rookie of the Year Charlotte Koerber (Munich, Germany) led the Wildcats offensively on the day with 11 kills. Molloy's First Team All-ECC outside hitter Kiarra Roth led all hitters on the floor with 18 kills and a team-high 12 digs in the Lions' loss. 
 
Daemen will find out their tournament seeding and East Regional location in the NCAA Division II Selection Show which will air on NCAA.com on Monday at 7:30 PM.




IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Charlotte Koerber finished with 11 kills for a .242 hitting percentage and added eight digs, two aces, one solo block and one assisted block for a team-high 14.5 points.
  • Maggie Burns posted nine kills while hitting at a .350 clip in the win along with a match-high 18 digs and one assist.
  • ECC Libero of the Year Jasmine Brundage (East Aurora, N.Y.) finished with 12 digs, four assists and one kill.
  • First Team All-ECC senior right side Giselle Giraud (Orlando, Fla.) totaled nine kills for a .333 hitting percentage along with three assisted blocks and two assists for 10.5 points.
  • Juniors Kate Ryan (Buffalo, N.Y.) and Amelia Armstrong (River Falls, Wisc.) each tallied seven kills. Armstrong led Daemen with five assisted blocks, while Ryan finished with three assisted blocks. 
  • Second Team All-ECC senior setter Dunja Masic (McHenry, Ill.) and senior setter Olivia Alessi (East Aurora, N.Y.) combined for 38 assists on the night, with Masic totaling 23 assists and adding four digs and an ace. Alessi posted 15 assists, four digs and aces. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Wildcats started the first set with a 5-1 run after back-to-back kills from Koerber and Giraud and a couple errors from the Lions. Molloy brought the game within two, but the Wildcats went on a 10-3 tear to take an 11-point lead, 18-7. The Lions would score six of the next seven points to bring the game within six, 19-13. From there, Daemen scored six of the last eight to take the first set 25-15.
  • Five Wildcats tallied three kills apiece as Daemen out-hit Molloy 17-10 and posted a .350 hitting percentage in the first.
  • The Lions and Wildcats kept the second set close from the jump. Daemen led 23-19 late in the set, but Molloy scored five unanswered points to make it set-point. After a huge tip from Koerber to tie the game at 24, the teams traded points but a kill by Burns won the set, 28-26, for Daemen.
  • Daemen totaled 15 kills for a .229 hitting percentage in the second. Burns and Giraud led the way with four second-set kills each.
  • Like the second set, Molloy and Daemen traded points to open the third. After a tied game at 12 all, Daemen went on a 6-1 to jump out to a lead, but the Lions tied the game up after three kills. From there, Molloy scored four straight to take a 21-18 lead, but the Cats rebounded with four straight points of their own!! 
GAME NOTES
  • Daemen and Molloy meet in the championship game for the second straight season. The Wildcats topped the Lions 3-0 to win the 2022 ECC Tournament title.
  • The Wildcats have played in the championship in each of the last three seasons and are making their fifth appearance since 2016. Daemen has won the ECC Tournament title three times.
  • Molloy is playing in the ECC title game for the fourth time in program history.
