AMHERST, N.Y. – BACK-TO-BACK-TO-BACK REGULAR SEASON CHAMPIONS!!!
The Daemen University women's volleyball team cruised to their third consecutive East Coast Conference regular season title with a 3-0 win (25-14, 25-19, 25-17) over Queens College on Saturday morning. As the regular season champs, the Wildcats clinch the top seed in the playoffs and will host the 2023 ECC Tournament between the top four teams in the league on Nov. 17-18 at Lumsden Gymnasium. The victory moves the Wildcats to 20-5 on the year and 10-0 in ECC play, while Queens drops to 12-9 overall and 6-4 in conference matches.
Daemen has now tallied three consecutive 20-win seasons with today's victory. The Wildcats extend their regular season ECC win streak to 33 straight matches dating back to Nov. 10, 2019.
IMPACT PLAYERS
- Junior right side Kate Ryan (Buffalo, N.Y.) led all players on the court with 11 kills on 19 attacks for a .421 hitting percentage while adding three digs and one assisted block.
- Fifth year senior outside hitter Maggie Burns (Louisville, Ky.) totaled 10 kills and 10 digs for her eighth double-double of the season, while adding three aces for a match-high 13 points.
- Senior right side Giselle Giraud (Orlando, Fla.) posted 10 kills for a match-high .625 hitting percentage and added two assisted blocks and one dig.
- Senior middle blocker Vanessa Kuliga (Glenview, Ill.) posted five kills for a .500 hitting percentage, one ace, one assist, two digs and one assisted block.
- Senior setters Dunja Masic (McHenry, Ill.) and Olivia Alessi (East Aurora, N.Y.) were a dual threat on the court this afternoon, with Masic totaling 21 assists (7 assists/set), two aces and two digs, and Alessi finishing with 20 assists (6.67 assists/set) and eight digs.
- Senior libero Jasmine Brundage (East Aurora, N.Y.) posted 14 digs (4.67 digs/set).
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- After a back-and-forth start to the first, the Wildcats went on a 10-2 run and held onto a 10-point lead for the rest of the set, taking the first 25-14. The Wildcats hit .400 in the first, with six Daemen players tallying kills in the set.
- After the Wildcats jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the second, the Knights came crawling back to keep the game close. From a 20-19 lead, Daemen won the final five points to take the second 25-19.
- Daemen came out swinging in the third, posting 10 kills through the first 13 points. The Wildcats totaled 20 kills in the set and finished with a .349 hitting percentage to take the final set 25-17 and win the match.
GAME NOTES
- The Wildcats have won the last ten matches against the Knights.
- With her 10-kill performance today, Burns is now just one kill away from totaling 1,000 kills over her five-year collegiate career. She notched her 1,000th career dig against Gannon earlier this season.
