AMHERST, N.Y. – It was another undefeated East Coast Conference season for the Daemen University women's volleyball team as the Wildcats swept crosstown rival D'Youville 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-8) on Thursday evening. With tonight's win, the Wildcats finished the 2023 season with a 12-0 ECC record, marking their third consecutive unbeaten season in conference play, and moved to 22-5 overall. Daemen extended their regular season conference win streak to 35 matches, a streak that dates back to Nov. 10, 2019.
Daemen out-hit D'Youville 46 to 17 on the night and posted a .333 hitting percentage, while holding the Saints to just .073 on the night. The Wildcats totaled 12 service aces, their second-highest ace total in a match this season.
The Wildcats honored four seniors –
Olivia Alessi (East Aurora, N.Y.),
Maggie Burns (Louisville, Ky.),
Vanessa Kuliga (Glenview, Ill.) and
Dunja Masic (McHenry, Ill.) along with their longtime Team IMPACT player,
Ava Hackett – prior to the match.
After winning their third straight ECC regular season championship last weekend, the top-seeded Wildcats will host the 2023 ECC Tournament next weekend (Nov. 17-18) at Lumsden Gymnasium.
IMPACT PLAYERS
- Senior outside hitter Giselle Giraud (Orlando, Fla.) led all hitters with 13 kills for a match-high .632 hitting percentage and added two assisted blocks to her match-high 14 points outing.
- Freshman middle Kate Trueblood (Granger, Ind.) posted a career-high nine kills while hitting at a .538 clip. She added a block assist and two digs on the day for 9.5 points.
- Sophomore outside hitter Nahirka Malpica (Caguas, P.R.) totaled eight kills for a .400 hitting percentage, one assisted block and one dig.
- Kuliga totaled five kills, three assisted blocks, three digs, one solo block and one ace on her Senior Night.
- Freshman Charlotte Koerber (Munich, Germany) posted five kills, two aces and 11 digs.
- The senior setter combo of Masic and Alessi combined for 34 assists tonight, with Masic totaling 21 assists, two aces, three digs and a kill, while Alessi totaled 13 assists, three digs and one ace.
- Senior libero Jasmine Brundage (East Aurora, N.Y.) totaled 12 digs, five aces and four assists on the night.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Wildcats jumped out to a 9-1 lead, but from there the Saints went on a 9-6 run to make it a five-point game. Daemen went on a 9-2 run at the end of the set to take the first, 25-15. Trueblood led all players with five first set kills.
- The second set was back-and-forth, until the Wildcats led by as much as eight in the middle of the set. Daemen scored four of the final five points to win the second 25-18 after out-hitting the Saints 17-8. Giraud tallied six kills in the second.
- Daemen took a 15-2 lead in the third after posting seven kills to open up the set, and kept up the intensity through to the end for a 25-8 third set victory.
