Emborsky Ties Daemen Record With Eight Three's As Wildcats Top STAC 77-68

AMHERST, N.Y. – In a high-scoring affair, the Daemen University women's basketball team notched a big 77-68 win over St. Thomas Aquinas on Friday night. The Wildcats moved to 16-4 on the season and 11-3 in East Coast Conference play, while handing STAC their second straight loss and moving the Spartans to 17-7 and 9-4 in ECC.
 
Hot-handed Daemen guard Paige Emborsky (Newfane, N.Y.) led the Wildcats after tallying a career-high 26 points, going 9-of-16 (56-perccent) from the field and knocking down a career-high 8 three-point field goals, which tied the Daemen record for most three-point field goals made in a game. The graduate student snagged a rebound and tallied two assist and a steal in the win. STAC's Sarah Ericson had an impressive night and led the Spartans with 26 points on the day.

After trading baskets in the first and the Spartans narrowly outscoring the Cats in the second, Daemen turned up the heat in the second half after trailing 30-25 at the half, and put together a 24-point quarter to take a six-point lead into the final quarter of play. The Wildcats shot 50-percent from the field in the fourth, and knocked down 11-of-14 free throws in the final quarter to edge out STAC by 9 points. Daemen shot 46-percent from the field (27-of-59) in the game, drained 10-of-27 (37-percent) from beyond the arc and 81-percent (13-of-16) from the free throw stripe. 

The Wildcats will face Mercy on Sunday afternoon in a noon matchup at Lumsden Gymnasium. 
 
IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Junior guard Alahna Paige (Rochester, N.Y.) shot 57-percent from the field (4-of-7) with a three, and drained 6-of-9 free throws to finish with 15 points. Paige pulled down seven rebounds and tallied two assists.
  • Junior forward Natalie Angeletti (Panama, N.Y.) led the Wildcats with 10 rebounds, pulling down nine defensive boards, along with an assist, a steal and six points. 
  • Fifth year forward Mickayla Ivy (Grand Rapids, Mich.) finished with a team-high six assists, and added six points (3-of-7), four rebounds, a steal and finished with the only Daemen block of the game.
GAME NOTES
  • With tonight's win, Daemen remains in first place in the ECC with a full game ahead of the Spartans and Mercy, who are both tied in second place with a 9-4 conference record. The Mavericks lost to D'Youville tonight.
  • In tying Daemen's program record for three point field goals in a game, Emborsky becomes the first player in the NCAA era (2015-present) to make eight three's in a game. Raeann Stillwell was the last Daemen player to drain eight three pointers in a game (vs. Molloy, Dec. 20, 2013). 
  • Five different Wildcats recorded baskets in the first quarter as Daemen led STAC 10-9 after the first 10 minutes of play.
  • Daemen shot 31-percent from the field in the first, shooting 5-of-16 but missing all seven attempted three pointers.
  • Emborsky knocked down back-to-back three's to open up the second quarter, and finished with three three-point field goals in the quarter. The graduate student led all shooters at the half with 11 points.
  • The Spartans out-scored the Wildcats 21-15 in the second, shooting 7-of-15 from the field.
  • Emborsky accounted for nine of Daemen's 15 points in the second.
  • Daemen came out hot after the break, putting together their highest scoring quarter in the third to outscore STAC 24 to 13. The Wildcats entered the fourth quarter with a 49-43 lead.
  • The Wildcats went on a 12-point scoring run halfway through the third quarter for the longest run in the game. 
  • The Wildcats shot 60-percent (9-of-15) from the field in the third and 50-percent (4-of-8) from beyond the arc.
  • Daemen narrowly out-scored STAC 28-25 in the fourth, while banking 50-percent from the field (7-of-14) and from three (3-of-6), but making it count on the free throw stripe with a 79-percent completion (11-of-14). 
  • The Wildcats led by as much as 11 points in the game.
  • Emborsky played all but eight minutes in the game, putting in a team-high 32 minutes on the court. 
  • Daemen out-rebounded the Spartans 42 to 33 on the night, pulling down 31 defensive boards compared to just 21 for the Spartans. 
  • The Wildcats accrued 14 points off 10 STAC turnovers.
  • Five Wildcats scored five or more points, with Ivy, Angeletti and Kaytlyn Matz (Johnsburg, Ill.) each recording six points.
  • Every Daemen player that touched the court recorded a rebound tonight. 
  • The Wildcats snapped a two game skid to STAC tonight. The Spartans handed Daemen a 61-53 loss in their second meeting of the 2021-22 season last year, snapping Daemen's 32-game win streak at home. 
  • Daemen has now won six straight games, with an average margin of victory of 22.5 points.
