SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Another match, another victory for the Daemen University men's volleyball team. The Wildcats picked up their fifth win of the season, and their fourth-straight victory, with a 3-0 (25-6, 25-15, 25-15) sweep over the American International Yellowjackets for the second time this season. Daemen moves to 5-1 on the year with their second straight road victory, while AIC drops to 1-9.
Playing in their final non-conference match before Daemen begins Northeast Conference play, 11 Wildcats tallied kills as Daemen out-killed AIC 35-18, while recording season-low attack errors (8) and a season-high eight total blocks in the match. The Wildcats earned a season-high .429 hitting percentage, while holding the Yellowjackets to a -.046 hitting percentage in the match, marking the first time this season an opponent hit for a negative percentage against Daemen.
The Wildcats enter NEC play on Friday, Feb. 10 at crosstown rival D'Youville at 7 PM.
IMPACT PLAYERS
- Senior outside hitter Ryan Parker (Fairport, N.Y.) recorded his first kills of the season, totaling a season-high seven kills with no errors for a .778 hitting percentage. Parker added a team-high four digs, an ace and an assist for eight total points.
- Coming off a season-high four block night against Harvard, graduate student Henry Moffitt (Sydney, Australia) totaled three blocks, while knocking down six kills on eight attacks for a .750 hitting percentage, and added an ace for a season-high nine points.
- Junior opposite Cameron Milligan (Pavilion, N.Y.) totaled five kills on nine attacks for a .556 hitting percentage along with four assists, an ace, two digs, and an assisted block.
- Sophomore middle blocker Ethan Sturm (Lisle, Ill.) made his second appearance of the year and finished with four kills for a .333 hitting percentage and adding two aces and two assisted blocks.
- Senior setter Sean Califf (Oak Park, Ill.) totaled 22 assists (7.33 assists/set) along with four digs, two blocks and one kill. Califf has recorded a kill in three of the five matches he has played in this season, and has earned all six of his blocks on the season over this weekend.
GAME NOTES
- The Wildcats have now swept three opponents on the season, including two sweeps over AIC.
- Daemen took an early 9-3 lead over the Yellowjackets off five Wildcat kills, and never looked back. The Wildcats stood tall at the net in the first, with Moffitt, Zach Schneider (Lockport, N.Y.), Jake Couzens (Hamburg, N.Y.) and Milligan each contributing assisted blocks early in the first.
- The Wildcats took the first set with ease 25-6, giving up a season low for set points. Six points ties a program record for the least amount of points allowed in a set (25-6 in the first set vs. Alderson Broaddus on Feb. 1, 2020).
- Daemen totaled a .625 hitting percentage on 11 kills on 16 attacks with just one error in the first. Milligan had 4 kills for a .667 hitting percentage, while Moffitt contributed 3 kills.
- Daemen's .625 first set hitting percentage marks the second-highest single set hitting percentage of the season. The Wildcats notched a .647 hitting percentage in the second set against AIC in their first matchup of the season on Jan. 21.
- The Wildcats cruised to a 25-15 victory in the second set, tallying 12 kills on 23 attacks for a .391 hitting percentage. Moffitt added three more kills in the second, while senior outside hitter Matthew Garry (Depew, N.Y.) notched two kills in the second set.
- Five of Parker's seven kills came in the third set, including the match-winner.
- The Wildcats held AIC to just 36 total points.
- Six Wildcats combined for eight service aces in the victory. Sturm and sophomore outside hitter Jake Basinski (Eden, N.Y.) each totaled two aces on the day.
- 11 out of the 12 Daemen players that stepped foot on the court recorded points in the match.
- Daemen tallied 20 digs on the day. Parker, Califf and senior defensive specialist John Jaworski (Naperville, Ill.) all totaled four digs a piece.
- Daemen accepted an invitation to join the Northeast Conference back in May, marking a significant stride for the program which has competed as an NCAA Division I-II independent since its inception in 2019. With support from the First Point Volleyball Foundation, the NEC announced men's volleyball as the league's 25th championship sport in September of 2021.
- The Wildcats were picked to finish fourth in the NEC men's volleyball preseason poll.
- Daemen is ranked seventh in in the latest Off The Block Division II Coaches Poll of the 2023 season.
- The Wildcats are now 40-9 in their last 49 matches, a span that dates back to February 2020.
