Schneider Tallies 17 Kills In Daemen's Loss At Concordia University Irvine

IRVINE, Calif. – The Daemen University men's volleyball team dropped just their second match of the season, falling 3-0 (19-25, 19-25, 22-25) to the Concordia University Irvine Golden Eagles in a Wednesday night matchup. CUI snaps Daemen's 10-match win streak, which was the longest active win streak among Division I/II teams, and the Wildcats move to 11-2 on the season.
 
In a battle between two of the top Division II teams in the nation, Daemen senior outside hitter Zach Schneider (Lockport, N.Y.) put on a clinic with a 17-kill performance, but Concordia took advantage of a multitude of Daemen errors to take the match.
 
Wednesday's match against the Golden Eagles marked the start of Daemen's three-match California road trip. The Wildcats will take on No. 7 Pepperdine on Friday night at 6 PM PST (9 PM EST).
 
IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Zach Schneider set a Daemen program record for most kills in a three-set match, finishing with a match-high 17 kills (5.66 kills/set) for a .394 hitting percentage, six digs and a match-high 17 points.
  • Junior opposite Cameron Milligan (Pavilion, N.Y.) totaled nine kills (3.0 kills/set), three digs and a solo block.
  • Senior setter Sean Califf (Oak Park, Ill.) finished with 32 assists (10.66 assists/set) and added a team-high seven digs and a kill.
  • A pair of Golden Eagles finished with double-digit kills, as Uriel Batista totaled 13 kills and Gage Doble tallied 10 on the night.
GAME NOTES
  • Daemen falls for the first time since Jan. 13 when they lost at No. 6 ranked Penn State University.
  • Daemen and Concordia met for the first time on the court.
  • The Wildcats are ranked sixth and the Golden Eagles are ranked fourth in the latest Off The Block Division II poll.
  • Daemen accepted an invitation to join the Northeast Conference back in May, marking a significant stride for the program which has competed as an NCAA Division I-II independent since its inception in 2019. With support from the First Point Volleyball Foundation, the NEC announced men's volleyball as the league's 25th championship sport in September of 2021.
  • The Wildcats opened the scoring in the first set with a kill by Henry Moffitt. Daemen and CUI traded points to start the game, but the Golden Eagles went on a 7-1 run halfway through the set to lead by as much as 13-8.
  • Daemen tried to put together a comeback later in the set, bringing the game within five, but the Wildcats would not be able to catch the Golden Eagles in the set. CUI took the first, 25-19.
  • Five Wildcats recorded kills in the first. Schneider led Daemen with four first-set kills and just one error for a .429 hitting percentage. The Wildcats out-killed CUI 12-9 in the first and totaled a .250 hitting percentage compared to .217 for the Golden Eagles.
  • The Golden Eagles tallied five aces in the first set compared to just one for the Wildcats. Daemen had a tough time at the line in the first with five service errors.
  • Daemen came back from a 4-1 deficit to open the second set, but after tying the set up at five a piece, CUI went on a 6-2 run to take a four-point lead, 11-7. From there, the Wildcats and Golden Eagles traded points through to the end of the set. CUI took the second set with a score of 25-19.
  • Schneider tallied six of Daemen's 11 kills in the second set and was the only Wildcat to tally more than two kills in the set.
  • The Golden Eagles were all over Daemen's serves today, only giving up four Wildcat aces. On the other end of the court, Daemen tallied 17 service errors, marking their highest service error total since Feb. 19 against Sacred Heart.
  • Daemen out-killed CUI 38-32 on the day and finished with a .235 hitting percentage.
UP NEXT
The California trip does not get any easier for the Wildcats. Daemen will face a pair of teams ranked in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) National Collegiate poll top-10, as they take on No. 7 Pepperdine on Friday night and No. 12 California State Northridge on Saturday night.
