Wildcats Pick Up 3-2 Win Over St. Francis Brooklyn

BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- The Daemen University men's volleyball team picked up their second consecutive 3-2 win (23-25, 34-32, 25-19, 28-30, 15-12), topping the St. Francis College Brooklyn Terriers in a five-set thriller on Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats moved to 15-4 overall and 9-1 in Northeast Conference play to remain in first place in the conference, while the Terriers dropped to 9-12 overall and 4-6 in NEC play. 

The Wildcats were narrowly out-killed 66-62 by the Terriers, but totaled 83 points in the victory over St. Francis Brooklyn. Daemen senior outside hitter Zach Schneider (Lockport, N.Y.) finished with a match-high 18 kills (3.6 kills/set), while hitting at a .261 clip in the match. 
 
IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Zach Schneider (Lockport, N.Y.) tallied his third double-double (kills-digs) totaled 18 kills off 46 assists for a .261 hitting percentage, and added 18 digs on the day. The senior outside hitter finished with four aces, one solo block and one assisted block for a match-high 23.5 points. 
  • Junior opposite Cameron Milligan (Pavilion, N.Y.) tallied 16 kills for a .205 hitting percentage, while adding two assists, two aces, two solo blocks and four digs for 20 points on the day. 
  • Senior setter Sean Califf (Oak Park, Ill.) finished with 50 assists (10 assists/set), nine digs, six kills and two aces in the victory. 
  • Senior libero John Jaworksi (Naperville, Ill.) tallied 11 digs on the day. 
  • Freshman Kyle Zelasko (West Seneca, N.Y.) finished with 11 digs, five kills and three aces. 
GAME NOTES
  • Tonight's match marked the second time in program history that the two teams have met. Daemen swept LIU, 3-0, in the first meeting this season.
  • The Wildcats and Terriers swapped points throughout the first set. St. Francis Brooklyn went on a late run, taking as much as a 22-17 lead late in the first, but Daemen put together a four-point run to make it a two-point game. The Terriers picked up the 25-23 first set victory.
  • St. Francis Brooklyn tallied 13 kills for a .310 hitting percentage compared to just 7 kills for .036 hitting percentage for the Wildcats.
  • Daemen and St. Francis Brooklyn traded points in the second, and turned it into extra points late in the set. This one went into the 30's, but Daemen picked up the 34-32 victory, marking the longest set of the season for the Wildcats.
  • The Cats hit at a .340 clip while knocking down 22 kills on 50 attempts in the second set.
  • Six Wildcats recorded kills through the first two sets, with Schneider leading the way with eight kills on the day.
  • Daemen opened up the third set on fire, kicking off things on a 12-6 run. Daemen held onto a lead throughout the rest of the set, taking the third 25-19.
  • After putting up 21 kills in the fourth, the Terriers topped the Wildcats 30-28 in the fourth set to force a pivotal fifth set.
  • St. Francis Brooklyn opened up the fifth on a 4-0 run. From there, the Wildcats came back and went on an 8-3 run to take an 8-7 lead. From there, the Wildcats went on a 7-4 run to take the fifth set 15-12 and win the match. 
  • Daemen finished with 12 aces in the match compared to just 5 for the Terriers. Schneider totaled four aces, while Zelasko finished with three aces on the night.
  • The Wildcats remained ranked fifth in the latest Off The Block poll after splitting their NEC matches with FDU and Saint Francis last week.
  • Daemen accepted an invitation to join the Northeast Conference back in May, marking a significant stride for the program which has competed as an NCAA Division I-II independent since its inception in 2019. With support from the First Point Volleyball Foundation, the NEC announced men's volleyball as the league's 25th championship sport in September of 2021.
