AMHERST, N.Y. – The Daemen University women's basketball team returned to East Coast Conference play on Friday evening with a 73-54 win over the College of Staten Island. After a back-and-forth first half, the Wildcats blew the game open with a 25-point third quarter and never looked back, winning their 14th consecutive ECC game to move to 9-4 on the year and 4-0 in ECC play. The Dolphins drop to 5-10 and 2-3 in ECC games, losing their eighth straight game.
Sophomore forward
Claire Pikett (Holland, N.Y.) had a career night against the Dolphins, dropping 20 points while shooting 64% (9-of-14) from the field. Senior guard
Alahna Paige (Rochester, N.Y.) followed up with 19 points, while senior guard
Gabby McDuffie (Buffalo, N.Y.) added 11 points.
The Wildcats increase their win streak at Lumsden Gymnasium to 20 straight, the fourth-longest home win streak in NCAA Division II women's basketball. Daemen's 14-game conference win streak is also the fourth-longest streak in the nation.
IMPACT PLAYERS
- Pikett led the Wildcats offensively for the first time this season, crossing the 20-point mark for the first time in her career. She added five rebounds, three steals and one block to her stat line on the day.
- Paige shot 27% (4-of-15) from the field and banked just two of nine shots beyond the arc but nailed 9-of-10 from the charity stripe while adding five defensive boards and three assists.
- McDuffie shot 40% (4-of-10) from the field, 50% (2-of-4) beyond the arc and 1-of-2 from the free throw line today to score double-digit points for the seventh game this season. She added four assists, two rebounds and one steal in the win.
- Junior forward Julia Hauer (Binghamton, N.Y.) and sophomore forward Cecilia Lapertosa (Whitesboro, N.Y.) each had big days on the boards, combining for 11 of Daemen's 38 total rebounds in the game. Hauer finished with six rebounds – four offensive boards and two defensive rebounds – and eight points, while Lapertosa totaled five defensive rebounds and seven points.
- Senior forward Natalie Angeletti (Panama, N.Y.) finished with a team-high nine rebounds, including four offensive boards, and five assists.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Dolphins opened the game on a 7-0 run, holding Daemen scoreless for two minutes. In the next two and a half minutes of game play, the Wildcats outscored CSI 9-3, with McDuffie and Pikett scoring all nine of Daemen's points. The Wildcats closed out the first scoring nine unanswered points, including a buzzer beater three from Pikett, to lead Staten Island 18-15 after one quarter.
- The Wildcats and Dolphins traded buckets in the first four minutes of the second quarter, but both teams went on a scoring drought for the next three minutes of the game. In the final three minutes of the second quarter, Daemen narrowly outscored Staten Island 9-7 to take a 31-25 lead at the half.
- Pikett led the Wildcats at the half with nine points, while McDuffie added eight points in the first two quarters. The Wildcats shot 41% in the first half (13-of-31) and made just three of 12 triples.
- The Wildcats picked up the pace in the third, topping Staten Island 25-17 in a high-scoring quarter. Paige scored 13 points in the third and helped the Wildcats shoot 54% from the field (7-of-13), 2-of-2 from the field and 9-of-11 from the charity stripe. Daemen led 56-42 after three quarters.
- With a large lead at hand, the Wildcats didn't pull back, with five different players combining to outscore CSI 17-12 in the fourth to take the game 73-54.
- Pikett led the charge in the third with six points, while Paige added four off of free throws.
- The Wildcats shot 42% (26-of-61) from the field, 27% (6-of-22) from beyond the arc and 79% (15-of-19) from the free throw line and narrowly out-rebounded the Dolphins 40-38 on the day.
UP NEXT
With Sunday's game against District of Columbia postponed due to inclement weather, the Wildcats will look ahead to next weekend as they travel to St. Thomas Aquinas and Mercy on Friday (5:30 PM) and Sunday (12 PM).
