Wildcats Complete Comeback Against Mercy, 55-51

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – In a Sunday afternoon thriller, the Daemen University women's basketball team got back into the win column, crawling back from a first-half deficit to beat Mercy University 55-51 in an East Coast Conference road game. The Wildcats move to 10-5 on the year and 5-1 in ECC play with the victory, while Mercy drops to 10-7 and 3-3 in the ECC.

Trailing in each of the first two quarters, Daemen came out of the halftime break on a scoring rampage (beating the Mavericks 21-9 in the third quarter), and headed into the final quarter on fire. But after taking an 11-point lead, the Wildcats could not keep the ball in their side of the court, and Mercy took advantage of fouls and turnovers to go on an 11-2 run to bring the game within one point in the final 30 seconds. Three well-shot free throws from senior guard Gabby McDuffie (Buffalo, N.Y.) staved off the late Mercy comeback to win the game by four and extend Daemen's win streak to 16 games over the Mavericks.

After scoring 12 of Daemen's 21 points in the Wildcats' high scoring third quarter, senior guard Alahna Paige (Rochester, N.Y.) finished the game with a team-high 20 points. Senior forward Natalie Angeletti (Panama, N.Y.) totaled 10 points in the win.

The Wildcats will host Molloy and Queens at Lumsden Gymnasium next weekend (Jan. 26 and 28) in a pair of ECC games.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Wildcats and Mavericks traded points back and forth to open the game, but the Mavericks kicked up the intensity in the final five minutes of the first with a 10-4 run to end the quarter to lead Daemen 15-4 after the first 10 minutes of the game.
  • Daemen put together a solid start to the second quarter on a 7-4 run and extended their run through the second to 13-7 to tie the game up at 22. The Mavs scored the final five points of the half thanks to a buzzer beater three ball from way downtown to take a 27-22 lead into the half.
  • Seven different Wildcats scored in the first half, with Kaytlyn Matz (Johnsburg, Ill.), Pikett and Shyla Montgomery (Brockton, Mass.) each totaling a team-high four first half points.

  • After trailing for the majority of the game, Daemen led by as much as 11 points in the fourth quarter, continuing their dynamic third quarter by opening the fourth on a 6-2 run. But from there, the Mavericks went on an 11-2 run to make it a one-point game, 52-51, with 30 seconds left. McDuffie drilled three free throws in the final 20 seconds of the game to seal the game, 55-51, for the Wildcats.
