Wildcats Take Down First Top-Five Opponent In NCAA DII Era, Upset #5 Ferris State

AMHERST, N.Y. – UPSET ALERT!! The Daemen University women's basketball team took down #5 ranked Ferris State 61-56 at Lumsden Gymnasium on Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference tilt, marking the first time in program history that Daemen beat a top-five ranked opponent.

With the win, the Wildcats move to 8-3 on the year and extend their home winning streak to 19 straight games, a streak that dates back to February 18, 2022, and is the fifth-longest home win streak in NCAA Division II. Daemen picks up a win over a ranked opponent for the first time since the 2022-23 season opener where the Wildcats topped #22 Pace 52-45. Ferris State drops just their second game of the season and moves to 6-2 this season.

Senior guard Alahna Paige (Rochester, N.Y.), who is in the middle of a career-best season, led all players on the floor with 26 points, marking the third straight and fifth game this season that she finished with 20+ points. Ferris State's Chloe Idoni led the Bulldogs with 22 point and finished with a double-double, adding 10 rebounds in the loss.

The Wildcats will travel to Pennsylvania to play in their final non-conference game of the season at Indiana (Pa.) on Saturday for a 1 PM tip-off.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • The Wildcats shot 50% (7-of-14) from the field in the first, with all seven buckets coming from seven different Wildcat players in the quarter. Daemen banked three of five three-pointers, with Pikett, Paige and Sophie Auer (Lewiston, N.Y.) each knocking down a triple.
  • The Bulldogs banked a pair of baskets to start the second quarter with an eight-point advantage, but from there, Ferris State went on a five-minute scoring drought as Daemen scored 11 unanswered points to take a 28-25 lead into the final minute. Paige knocked down a three with 33 seconds left in the second to give Daemen a 31-28 lead going into the half.
