Wildcats Fall To D'Youville in Five-Set Thriller

AMHERST, N.Y. – The Daemen University women's volleyball team dropped their second East Coast Conference match of the season, falling to D'Youville University 3-2 (18-25, 25-22, 25-11, 25-27, 15-10) in a thrilling back-and forth five set match on Thursday afternoon. The Wildcats fall to 10-5 and 3-2 in ECC play while the Saints pick up their third conference victory of the season, moving to 6-11 overall and 3-2 in ECC matches. Daemen's loss also snaps a 17-game home win streak that was the fourth-longest in NCAA Division II women's volleyball.
 
The Wildcats return to Lumsden Gymnasium on Friday for a non-conference match against Wilmington set for 7 PM.
 
IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Right side Giselle Giraud (Orlando, Fla.) finished with a team-high 14 kills on 35 attacks for a .314 hitting percentage. The graduate student added one block assist and five digs for 14.5 points.
  • Senior middle Amelia Armstrong (River Falls, Wisc.) totaled 11 kills on 25 attacks with just three errors for a .320 hitting percentage and three block assists.
  • Graduate student outside hitter Abby Ryan (Orchard Park, N.Y.) finished with 10 kills on 26 attacks. She added nine digs and two aces on the night.
  • Senior setter Avery Dole (Summerfield, N.C.) posted 23 assists, nine digs and one kill. She finished with seven aces, four of which came within five serves in the third set.
  • Sophomore setter Molly Ryan (Orchard Park, N.Y.) finished with a double-double, totaling 19 assists and 10 digs while adding a kill.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • D'Youville opened the first set up 5-1 and kept their foot on the gas, taking a 12-6 advantage. The Wildcats went on a 7-4 run from there off five Daemen kills to bring the set within three, 16-13. The Saints won nine of the last 13 points to take the first set, 25-18. D'Youville out-hit the Wildcats 15-11 for a .306 hitting percentage in the set while holding Daemen to hit just .176.
  • The Wildcats and Saints went point for point throughout the second set. After D'Youville tied it up at 18 late in the second, Daemen scored three unanswered points to take a 21-18 lead. The Wildcats would hold onto that three-point lead to the end and take the set 25-22 after notching 15 kills on 34 attacks. Giraud, Armstrong and Malpica each totaled three kills in the set.
  • Daemen got down to business in the third, starting the set up 9-5 after scoring six unanswered points and going on a 16-6 run from there to the take the set, 25-11. The Wildcats out-hit D'Youville 13-8 at a .500 clip while Giraud led the way with four third-set kills.
  • After going on a 7-2 run in the middle of the set, the Saints took a 17-15 lead over the Cats, but from there Daemen would score five of the next six points to lead 20-18. Daemen and D'Youville each traded points to the end, with the Wildcats winning three points on the set point for the Saints. D'Youville scored the final two off a kill and a block to take the fourth, 27-25 to force a fifth set.
  • The Wildcats crawled back from a 4-1 deficit in the fifth, tying it up at four after a Malpica kill and a pair of D'Youville attack errors. The Wildcats again mounted a comeback, going on a 4-2 run to make it a one point game, 9-8. D'Youville would finish the game off winning six of the final eight points of the match to take the fifth set, 15-10 and beat the Wildcats for the first time.
