KUTZTOWN, PA. – Daemen University improved to 6-1 in nonconference play as they defeated Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opponent Kutztown University, 5-2, in intercollegiate women's tennis action Monday afternoon.
With the win, the Wildcats improved to 7-4 overall while the Bears dropped to 1-3. Daemen also now leads the all-time series, 2-1, after just the third meeting between the two sides.
The Wildcats opened the match by winning all three doubles matches to take the doubles point. The duo of
Frida Rubio (San Diego, Calif.) and
Bella Bjerkan (Elmhurst, Ill.) earned a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles while the senior combination of
Kitsa Scime (Williamsville, N.Y.) and
Yinett Del Leon (Cape Coral, Fla.) took home a 6-4 win on No. 2 doubles.
Carly Armitage (Rochester, N.Y.) and
Stephanie Baier (Boise, Idaho) won No. 3 doubles by default as the Bears did not field a third team.
Moving to singles, Rubio kept her winning ways going with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Emma Semery. Rubio has now won three of her last four matches dating back to Oct. 4 against Queens College. The San Diego, Calif, native also moved into fifth all-time for combined singles and doubles career wins with 73, passing Jessica Robins. Kutztown got two points back with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, but Bjerkan collected her fourth singles win of the year with a 6-2, 6-0, decision at No. 4 singles. At No. 5 singles, Baier took home a 6-1, 6-0 win and Armitage won No. 6 singles by default as the Bears did not field a sixth player.
