In a game that featured 24 lead changes, it was the Greyhounds who emerged with a 77-72 win following two overtime periods. The game was played at the Voller Athletic Center as part of the Redhawks Classic hosted by Roberts Wesleyan University. Daemen, which dropped a 59-55 decision to Felician University in their regular season opener yesterday, falls to 0-2 on the young season. Assumption improved to 2-0, pairing today's win with a 68-59 triumph yesterday over the host Redhawks. It was just the third all-time meeting between the Wildcats and Greyhounds, and was a rematch of last season's NCAA Division II East Region Championship semifinals, a Daemen win that propelled them to the program's second regional title. IMPACT PLAYERS DiCintio, who was a four-year player at Roberts Wesleyan before transferring to Daemen, felt right at home inside the Voller Athletic Center and canned five three-pointers to lead the Wildcats. She shot 7-for-14 from the field overall and added three steals. Junior forward Cecilia Lapertosa (Whitesboro, N.Y.) played 49 of a possible 50 minutes, finishing the game with 12 points and five rebounds, while classmate Shyla Montgomery (Brockton, Mass.) tossed in 12 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals. Junior forward Claire Pikett (Holland, N.Y.) chipped in with 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds while sophomore guard Sophie Auer (Lewiston, N.Y.) added 11 points. The five Daemen starters accounted for 68 of their 72 points. Marina Callahan of Assumption led all scorers with 29 points while adding 10 rebounds. She shot 9-for-18 from the field and 10-for-14 from the charity stripe. Molly Stokes nailed three three-pointers as part of a 17-point outing for the Greyhounds, and Kaijhe Hall add 15 points and six boards. INSIDE THE BOX SCORE After neither team led by more than six points during the first 20 minutes of play, Assumption opened up a 10-point advantage earlier in the third quarter. Daemen battled back though, and eventually took a 52-51 lead on a three-pointer by Auer with 5:35 left in the fourth quarter. The teams traded the lead four times in the final five miuntes of the fourth quarter. DiCintio's running right-hander with two seconds left gave Daemen a 62-60 lead, but Assumption answered on the ensuing inbounds play with a Callahan layup before time expired. Daemen took its first lead of the overtime period when Pikett drilled a three-pointer at the 1:32 mark, giving them a slim 67-66 edge. It remained that way until Hall was fouled in the act of shooting with 0.4 seconds left. She missed the first free throw, but canned the second, sending the game to a second overtime. Daemen led by three (70-67) early in the second overtime period and later took a 72-70 lead with 1:52 to go after DiCintio made a pair of free throws. But, Assumption closed on a 7-0 run to secure the victory. A jumper by Teagan Curran with under a minute to go proved to be the go-ahead bucket.
