DiCintio and Pikett Each Score 17 As Women's Basketball Tops STAC 58-50

AMHERST, N.Y. – Claire Pikett (Holland, N.Y.) and Danielle DiCintio (Somers, N.Y.) each scored 17 points as the Daemen University women's basketball team topped St. Thomas Aquinas College 58-50 on Friday night. The Wildcats won their seventh straight game and move to 7-3 overall and 3-0 in East Coast Conference play while the Spartans drop to 3-6 and 1-1 in ECC games.  
 
The Wildcats opened the game on fire and outscored the Spartans 25-7, but STAC put together a 17-4 second quarter to make it a five-point game at the half. Daemen narrowly outscored the Spartans 29 to 26 in the second half. Daemen shot 33.3% from the field and 34.4% beyond the arc and despite the Spartans making it a close game at times, Daemen never trailed in the game.
 
Daemen welcomes Mercy University to Lumsden Gymnasium on Sunday in an 11 AM matinee match up for their final home game of 2024.
 
IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Pikett tallied her fifth double-digit scoring game this season, finishing with 17 points after going 7-of-13 from the field and 3-of-7 beyond the arc. The junior forward totaled seven rebounds, two blocks and three steals.
  • DiCintio played all 40 minutes of the game and finished with 17 points after going 4-of-14 from the field while knocking down three triples beyond the arc and banking all six free throws attempted. She snagged four defensive boards, doled out four assists and had one steal on the night.
  • Sophomore guard Sophie Auer (Lewiston, N.Y.) played all 40 minutes tonight and finished with 11 points after going banking three triples and going 2-for-2 at the charity stripe. She totaled six rebounds and had a team-high five assists.
  • Freshman guard Morgan White (New Carlisle, Ind.) made her second career start and finished with six points off a triple, a jumper and a free throw while pulling down five rebounds – three offensive – three assists and one steal.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Daemen opened the game on an 11-3 run after triples from Pikett (2) and DiCintio and a Pikett layup. The Wildcats remained in control for the rest of the quarter and took an 18-point lead over STAC to the end of the first up 25-7. All five Wildcat starters knocked down triples in the first quarter with Pikett and DiCintio each totaling two three's.
  • The Spartans found their footing offensively in the second, kicking off the quarter with an 11-2 run to bring the game within nine, 27-18. STAC closed the first off scoring the final six points and out-scored Daemen 17 to 4 in the quarter to make it a five-point game at the half, 29-24. After shooting 60% from the field in the first, the Wildcats were just 2-of-13 and 0-of-6 beyond the arc in the second to shoot 15.4% from the field.
  • Pikett got the Wildcats going in the third with a triple to get back on track. Daemen outscored STAC 11 to 4 in the first seven minutes of the quarter off eight points from Auer, but the Spartans would score six unanswered to bring the game within six. A triple from DiCintio stopped the STAC run. The Wildcats closed out the third with a 43-34 advantage heading into the final quarter.
  • The Wildcats and Spartans traded points throughout the fourth quarter. After STAC made it a six-point game, 49-43, the final minute and a half of the game mostly consisted of fouls. The Wildcats scored nine points on free throws down the stretch to beat the Spartans 58-50.
GAME NOTES
  • The Wildcats are ranked 10th in the East Region in the latest Division II College Sports Communicators (D2CSC) regional poll, as released on Monday.
  • Daemen is now 11-14 all-time against the Spartans. St. Thomas Aquinas is the only team in the ECC that the Wildcats have a losing record against.
  • The Wildcats move to 3-0 at Lumsden Gymnasium this season and have won 16 of the last 17 home games dating back to the start of the 2023-24 season.
  • Daemen shot 33.3% from the field, going 18-of054, and was 11-of-32 beyond the arc for a 34.4% three-point field goal percentage.
  • The Wildcats out-rebounded STAC 40 to 38 on the night.
