DiCintio Scores 1,000th Career Point As Women's Basketball Falls At Hawaii Pacific

HONOLULU, Hawaii -- The Daemen University women's basketball team closed out the Hoops In Hawaii Classic with a 62-46 loss to hosts Hawaii Pacific on Saturday night, dropping their second game in a row in the Aloha State. The Wildcats move to 8-5 overall while the Sharks improve to 5-3 on the year.

Daemen and HPU were tied after the first at 16, but the second quarter was where the Sharks put the game away, outscoring the Wildcats 19-2 to take a lead that Daemen could never overcome. The Wildcats shot 30.5% (16-of-52) from the field in the loss and struggled beyond the arc, making just 3-of-18 from three-point land, with two of their three's coming in the first quarter. HPU shot 35.7% from the field and dominated from a distance, going 11-of-26 beyond the arc.

Graduate student guard Danielle DiCintio (Somers, N.Y.) scored her 1,000th point tonight on a free throw in the third quarter.

This was the final game of 2024 for the Wildcats who will return to Lumsden Gymnasium on Thursday, Jan. 3 to play host to Indiana University (Pennsylvania) in a 6:30 PM match up.

IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Junior forward Claire Pikett (Holland, N.Y.) led the Wildcats both offensively and defensively with 14 points and eight rebounds. Pikett shot 5-of-18 from the field and knocked down a triple and three free throws while adding two blocks and two steals.
  • Scoring her 1,000th career point tonight, DiCintio finished with 12 points after going 4-of-9 from the field with a three and was 3-of-6 from the charity stripe. She had four assists, two rebounds and a steal.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • In a back-and-forth first quarter, the Wildcats took a 9-5 lead in the first four minutes but the Sharks tied it up at 11 two minutes later. HPU scored the next five points but in the final two minutes of the game, DiCintio knocked down a triple and finished the quarter off with a layup in the final seconds to tie it up at 16 after the first 10 minutes of play.
  • The Sharks dominated the second quarter from the start, scoring 14 straight through the first five minutes. Daemen was outscored 19-2 in the second quarter, with both Wildcat points coming off free throws, and took a 35-18 lead into the break. • The Cats and Sharks traded baskets throughout the fourth quarter and finished the game outscoring HPU 10-4 in the final three minutes. Daemen and Hawaii Pacific each scored 17 points in the fourth but the second quarter Shark lead was too much to overcome as the Sharks topped the Cats 62-46.
