Schneider and Califf Lead Wildcats To Sweep Of Merrimack

Daemen Runs Winning Streak To Five Matches; Remains Perfect In NEC Play

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The Daemen University men's volleyball team swept Merrimack University 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-21) in North Andover, Mass. this evening. The Wildcats win their fifth straight match and move to 8-2 on the year, while opening Northeast Conference play with a 3-0 record. The Wildcats entered the match ranked third in the latest Off The Block Division II Coaches Poll. Merrimack moves to 2-7 overall and 1-1 in NEC play.

Fifth year senior Zach Schneider (Lockport, N.Y.) led the Wildcats offensively with 16 kills and a .345 hitting percentage. Overall, Daemen totaled 45 kills on 81 attacks for a .407 hitting percentage on the day.

IMPACT PLAYERS

  • Schneider also added six digs on the match with only six total errors to continue his hot streak.

  • Freshman middle Ondrej Arabasz (Jicin, Czech Republic) added six kills on six total attempts and zero errors for a perfect hitting percentage. He also added one dig in the match.

  • Junior middle Maverick O'Neill (East Amherst, N.Y.) posted nine kills on 11 attacks with just two errors for a .818 hitting percentage.

  • Fifth year setter Sean Califf (Oak Park, Ill.) totaled 32 assists (10.7 assists/set) and five digs. 

GAME NOTES

  • After trading points to open the first set, neither team went on more than a 3-0 run. The Wildcats pulled away at the end to win 25-23 and held Merrimack to a match low .345 hitting percentage.

  • The second set opened up with a 3-0 run for the Warriors. The hosts were up 11-7 when the Wildcats scored six of the next seven points to take a 13-12 lead. Merrimack scored the next three points and later took a 20-17 lead following a kill by Logan Whitaker. A kill by Califf then sparked the Wildcats on a match-ending 8-3 rally to win 25-23.

  • The Wildcats recorded a match-high 18 kills in the second set as they competed with Merrimack's 15.

  • The third set started out the same as the others by trading points back and forth. Daemen held an 8-6 lead when the visitors took control with an 8-3 run that gave Daemen a 16-9 lead. The teams traded points the rest of the way and Daemen secured the match with a 25-21 win.

  • The Wildcats out killed the Warriors 45-41.

The Wildcats will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 23 vs Fairleigh Dickinson. The match will be played in Lumsden Gymnasium at 6 p.m.
