Solid Wildcat Defensive Effort Lends To 71-44 Victory At Staten Island

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Daemen University women's basketball team won its ninth East Coast Conference game of the season with a 71-44 road win over the College of Staten Island Dolphins on Friday night. With the win, the ECC-leading Wildcats move to 14-5 on the year and 9-1 in conference play, while the Dolphins drop to 7-14 and 4-7 in ECC games.
 
The Wildcats shot 51% (26-of-51) from the field, 7-of-19 (37%) from beyond the arc and knocked down 12-of-16 from the free throw stripe while holding the home team Dolphins to a 25% shooting percentage (17-of-68), 4-of-21 from three-point land and 6-of-10 from the charity stripe. Daemen's standout senior guard Alahna Paige (Rochester, N.Y.) led all players with a 24-point outing.
 
As the top defensive unit in the ECC this season, the Wildcats will square off against the ECC's top offense, District of Columbia, on Sunday with a 1 PM game to wrap up the road trip.
 
IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Paige shot 53% (9-of-17) from the field and banked 4-of-9 from beyond the arc to lead the Cats for the 13th game this season. Playing just 28 minutes in the game, the senior added three defensive boards and two assists.
  • Sophomore forward Claire Pikett (Holland, N.Y.) totaled 14 points after shooting an impressive 83% (5-of-6) from the field and banking both triples. She pulled down seven rebounds and tallied two assists and a block on the day.
  • Sophomore forward Cecilia Lapertosa (Whitesboro, N.Y.) pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds and dished out four assists, two blocks and two steals.
  • Junior forward Julia Hauer (Binghamton, N.Y.) totaled nine points after going 4-of-4 from the field and added three assists and one rebound. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Wildcats opened up the game on fire, shooting 9-of-14 from the field to take a 25-8 lead over the Dolphins after the first. Six different Wildcats tallied points in the first, with Paige leading all shooters with 10 points.
  • Staten Island put together a solid second quarter, outscoring Daemen 15-10 to cut the Wildcat lead to 12, 35-23 at the half. The Wildcats shot just 36% (4-of-11) in the second and missed four triples.
  • The Wildcats shot 46% (6-of-14) from the field and 2-of-5 from beyond the arc in the third while holding the Dolphins to just a 14% field goal percentage in the quarter. Paige and Pikett combined for 10 of Daemen's 16 third-quarter points as Daemen led 51-32 after three.
  • Daemen maintained their large lead throughout the fourth quarter, topping the Dolphins 20-12 in the final quarter after banking 7-of-13 from the field, 2-of-4 from beyond the arc and all four free throws.
  • The Wildcats have beaten Staten Island in all seven match ups between the two teams in the three-year history of the match up.
  • Since the 2018-19 season, Daemen is 75-11 in conference play.
