St. Lawrence Outlasts Daemen, 4-3

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. - The Daemen University women's tennis team dropped to 6-10 on the year following a 4-3 victory loss to St. Lawrence University Saturday evening this evening at Miller Tennis Center. The Saints improved to 4-1.

The match was played under NCAA Division I/II scoring rules and the SLU claimed the doubles point after winning two of the three matches. Daemen's No. 1 singles team of senior Frida Rubio (San Diego, Calif.) and junior Kitsa Scime (Williamsville, N.Y.) suffered a 6-1 loss Molly Jespersen and Yvette Karera. SLU claimed the point after Elena Stylaides and Abigail Sicuranza posted a 6-0 win over junior Emily Jablonski (Alden, N.Y.) and junior Arianna Lysiak (Depew, N.Y.) at No. 2 doubles. Daemen denied SLU the doubles sweep after Daemen's No. 3 doubles team of junior Yinett Del Leon (Cape Coral, Fla.) and sophomore Carly Amitage (Rochester, N.Y.) picked up a 6-1 win over Maya Stepic and Meredith Macey.

The teams split the six singles matches. SLU took a 3-0 lead after Macey posted a 6-1, 6-1 win over Jablonski at No. 5 singles and Sicuranza defeated sophomore Dania Mehani (Amherst, N.Y.) 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles. The Saint secured the win after Jespersen downed Rubio, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles.

Daemen picked up their three points at second, third and fourth singles. Scime defeated Karena (6-4, 6-4), Del Leon rallied past Styliades (3-6, 6-2, 6-1) and Armitage outlasted Stepic (7-6 (7-2), 7-5).

Daemen head to Orlando, Fla. this week for two matches.

MATCH NOTES
  • The match marked the first all-time meeting between the two schools.
     
  • Scime is now 14-5 on the season. She ranks fifth among Daemen's all-time leaders in career singles wins (37) and is now 32-12 in her last 44 singles matches dating back to the end of her freshman season.
