Krueger Nets 500th Dig And 2,000th Assist In 3-1 Win Over SHU On Senior Night

AMHERST, N.Y. – On Senior Day where the Daemen University men's volleyball team honored three pivotal players in their final regular season home match, the Wildcats topped Sacred Heart 3-1 (25-18, 25-20, 20-25, 25-18) in the regular season finale on Saturday afternoon. Daemen finished the 2024 regular season by setting a program record for wins with an 18-6 overall record and 9-3 record in Northeast Conference play. The Wildcats secured the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye in the upcoming NEC Tournament, to be held in Loretto, Pa. next week on the campus of Saint Francis University.
 
Playing in his 101st career match, Michael Krueger (Canonsburg, Pa.) tallied his 500th dig on the first play of the game and posted his 2,000th career assist after serving as Daemen's setter in the third set. Krueger was one of three Wildcats honored on Senior Day before the match, along with fifth year setter Sean Califf (Oak Park, Ill.) and senior opposite Cameron Milligan (Pavilion, N.Y.).
 
The Wildcats out-hit Sacred Heart 60 to 44 in the match and posted a .435 hitting percentage on the night. A pair of Wildcat heavy hitters in Zach Schneider (Lockport, N.Y.) and Milligan combined for 34 of Daemen's 60 total kills.
 
IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Schneider led the Wildcats offensively for the 15th match this season, totaling 18 kills on 34 attacks for a .353 hitting percentage while adding six digs, two aces, one assist and one block assist for a match-high 20.5 points.
  • Playing in his final home game of his four-year Daemen career, Milligan totaled 16 kills on 25 attacks for a .520 hitting percentage. The senior added four digs, four block assists, two aces and two assists on the night.
  • Califf finished his final home game with 44 assists (11 assists/set), four kills on four attacks for a 1.00 hitting percentage and two block assists.  
  • As Daemen's all-time dig and assist leader, Krueger finished his Senior Day with seven digs and seven assists.
  • Junior middle Maverick O'Neill (East Amherst, N.Y.) posted nine kills for a .462 clip, two block assists, one ace and one dig.
  • Junior outside hitter Billy Wieberg (Grand Island, N.Y.) totaled seven kills on 15 attacks for a .467 hitting percentage and led the Wildcats with 12 digs while adding two aces.
  • Freshman middle Ondrej Arabasz (Jicin, Czech Republic) posted six kills on 14 attacks for a .429 clip, three block assists, one ace and one dig.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • It was an evenly matched start to the first, with both teams trading points to open the set until Daemen went on a 3-0 run in the middle of the set to take a 16-13 lead. After a pair of Sacred Heart kills, the Wildcats went on another run, scoring six unanswered points to grab a 22-15 advantage. Daemen would take the first set, 25-18, after tallying 17 kills for a .467 hitting percentage.
  • The Wildcats and Pioneers played even up to 15. From there, Daemen went on a 10-5 run to take the first set 25-20 after posting eight kills. The Wildcats finished the second set with 19 kills on 30 attacks for a .600 hitting percentage. Milligan led the way with five second-set kills for Daemen.
  • Sacred Heart opened the third set on a 14-8 run, taking advantage of the Wildcats' -.091 hitting percentage after early attack errors. The Wildcats went on a 7-4 run to bring the game within three, 18-15, but five Daemen errors down the stretch was the difference maker as SHU took the third set 25-20. Milligan led Daemen with five kills in the third.
  • Daemen handled business in the fourth, opening the set with a 9-4 lead and stayed squarely in the lead for the rest of the game, never trailing in the set. The Wildcats outhit Sacred Heart 13-9 in the fourth and finished with a 25-18 win to take the match, 3-1.
  • The Wildcats are 4-1 all-time against the Pioneers and have won all four NEC matches over the past two seasons.
