Women's Volleyball Opens ECC Play With 3-1 Win Over Mercy

AMHERT, N.Y. – The Daemen University women's volleyball team defended home court on Saturday, taking down Mercy University 3-1 (25-15, 19-25, 25-16, 25-21) in the Wildcats' home opener. It was the East Coast Conference opener for both teams, as Daemen moves to 8-3 on the year and 1-0 in ECC play and the Mavericks drop to 5-3 overall and 0-1 in ECC matches. It marked the fifth straight victory for the Wildcats. With the win, Daemen extends their regular-season conference win streak to 36 matches with the victory in a streak that dates back to Nov. 10, 2019.
 
Daemen dominated on the offensive side of the ball today, out-hitting Mercy 56 to 29 and finishing with a .234 hitting percentage. Two Wildcats finished with double-digit kills in the win, with graduate student Abby Ryan (Orchard Park, N.Y.) leading the charge with 15 kills.
 
The Wildcats are back in action on Sunday as they host St. Thomas Aquinas College in a noon match up at Lumsden Gymnasium.
 
IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Ryan, a 5-foot-10 outside hitter, posted double-digit kills for the third straight match, finishing with 15 kills on 43 attacks and adding five digs and an ace for a match-high 16 points in her ECC debut.
  • Graduate student Giselle Giraud (Orlando, Fla.) totaled 11 kills on 23 attacks ad added three digs and a solo block.
  • After winning ECC Player of the Week on Monday, junior outside hitter Nahirka Malpica (Caguas, P.R.) finished with nine kills on 22 attacks and added eight digs, two assists and one ace.
  • Making her conference debut on Saturday, freshman Payton Gaylor (Bowmanville, Ont.) totaled eight kills with three errors on 14 attacks for a .357 hitting percentage and added one dig.
  • Senior middle Amelia Armstrong (River Falls, Wisc.) posted eight kills with just two errors on 12 attacks to hit at a .500 clip. She added one assist, one solo block, one block assist and one dig.
  • Senior setter Avery Dole (Summerfield, N.C.) finished with four kills, 29 assists, four digs, one solo block, one assisted block and one ace.
  • After earning her second straight ECC Defensive Player of the Week honors, graduate student libero Jasmine Brundage (East Aurora, N.Y.) posted 19 digs, four assists and three aces.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Wildcats opened the first set on an 8-1 run after taking advantage of three Daemen kills and two aces to begin the match. Mercy put together a 9-3 run to bring the match within two, 12-10, but the Wildcats closed out the first set by scoring 13 of the final 18 points to take the first, 25-15. Daemen totaled 12 first set kills and held the Mavericks to just four. Gaylor and Ryan led the way in the first with three kills apiece.
  • The Wildcats and Mavericks traded points throughout the beginning of the second. After tying it up at seven, Mercy went on a 13-8 run to take a 20-15 lead late. The Mavs took the second set, 25-19 after taking advantage of Daemen's 13 attack and service errors in the set.
  • Daemen controlled the third set from the start, jumping out to a 10-6 advantage after out-hitting the Mavericks 7-2 to open the set. The Wildcats went on to take down Mercy 25-16 in the third after racking up 17 kills for a .481 hitting percentage. Ryan posted a team-high five kills in the third set.
  • Mercy and Daemen went point-for-point in the fourth. After the Wildcats brought the game within one point, 15-14, they won the next seven points to take a 20-15 lead. Despite a late comeback, the Wildcats would hang on to win the fourth, 25-21, and take the match 3-1 over the Mavericks.
  • The Wildcats win their eighth straight over Mercy and move to 19-3 all-time against the Mavericks.
