ROCHESTER, N.Y. – In their largest win of the season, the Daemen University women's basketball wrapped up the first half of East Coast Conference play on Saturday with a 70-46 victory over longtime rival Roberts Wesleyan University. The Wildcats improve to 12-6 overall and 8-0 in ECC games while the Redhawks drop to 1-15 on the year and 1-7 in conference match ups.
For the fifth straight game, the Wildcats shot 40% or better from the field, finishing the afternoon shooting 44.3% from the field (27-of-61) and were 8-of-13 beyond the arc. Three different Wildcats scored in the double-digits with junior forward
Claire Pikett (Holland, N.Y.) leading all players with 19 points on the night.
The Wildcats return to Lumsden Gymnasium next weekend with a pair of games against Staten Island (Jan. 31) and District of Columbia (Feb. 2).
IMPACT PLAYERS
- Pikett scored in the double figures for the 11th game this season, totaling 19 points after shooting 50% from the field (7-of-14) and 50% (3-of-6) beyond the arc. The junior also pulled down eight rebounds – two offensive boards – along with two assists, two steals and a block.
- Freshman forward Ne'vaeh Buntley (Rochester, N.Y.) totaled double digit points for the fourth straight game today, finishing with 14 points after going 5-of-9 from the field (55.6%) and 3-of-4 (75%) beyond the arc while adding five defensive rebounds and three assists.
- Redshirt freshman guard Meghan Trapper (Buffalo, N.Y.) finished with a career-high 13 points and shot 71.4% (5-of-7) from the field and included one offensive board, one block and one steal after playing a season-high 21 minutes today.
- Junior forward Cecilia Lapertosa (Whitesboro, N.Y.) finished with 13 rebounds – four offensive – and totaled seven points and four assists.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Buntley opened the scoring for the Wildcats with a triple 3:30 minutes into the game and one minute later, Pikett added a three of her own and picked off Roberts to add a breakaway layup 30 seconds later to take an 8-4 lead early. The Redhawks scored four unanswered to tie it up at eight, but the Cats went on a 6-1 run to the end of the quarter off a triple from Buntley and a three-point play by Pikett to take a 14-9 lead into the second.
- It was high scoring second quarter for both teams. The Redhawks kicked off the second with a bucket to make it a three-point game, 14-11, but the Wildcats extended their lead with another three from Buntley at 8:18 to improve to 17-11 and force a Roberts timeout. Over the next six minutes, both teams traded buckets and in the final minute each team scored twice, with the Redhawks knocking down a pair of layups and Daemen finishing with a layup from Trapper and a triple from Morgan White (New Carlisle, Ind.) to give the Cats the 34-25 lead at the break. Daemen shot 53.3% (8-of-15) and 50% (3-of-6) from beyond the arc in the second.
- In the first 30 seconds of the third quarter, Pikett knocked down her second three of the game and added a layup two minutes later. Lapertosa banked a layup to give the Wildcats the 41-30 advantage. The Cats closed out the quarter on a 11-2 run after going 3-of-5 from the field and 5-of-8 from the charity stripe and led 54-36 after three quarters.
- After the Redhawks opened the fourth on a 4-2 run, Daemen scored eight unanswered and took a 26-point lead, 62-36, with five minutes left in the game. Despite a late 10-point run by the Redhawks, the Wildcats still maintained a 20-point lead and capped off the game it with a pair of layups from freshman Reece Beaver (Busti, N.Y.) to win the game, 70-46.
GAME NOTES
- With the win today, the Wildcats improve to 56 and 25 all-time against the Redhawks. The Cats have won the last nine meetings between the two teams.
- Daemen remains ranked eighth in the latest Division II College Sports Communicators (D2CSC) Regional Rankings. The Wildcats have been ranked in the region throughout the season and have been the only ECC team ranked regionally this year.
- The Wildcats scored 70 or more points for the sixth game this season today.
- Daemen out-rebounded Roberts Wesleyan 44 to 30 and doubled the Redhawks up in offensive boards (14 to 7) on the day.
- The Wildcats are the only remaining team with an undefeated record in conference play.
