BONAVENTURE, N.Y. — Daemen held the lead for the majority of the first three quarters and was ahead by as much as 14, but a second half run from St. Bonaventure helped the Bonnies pull back in it and defeat the Wildcats 79-68 in an exhibition matchup at the Reilly Center on Wednesday evening. Daemen began the first quarter by responding to an early deficit with a layup from Julia Fontanillo (Valladolid), assisted by Shyla Montgomery (Brockton, Mass.). Ne'vaeh Buntley drained a three, narrowing the margin and setting up a back-and-forth exchange that saw Daemen take the lead at 9-7. Montgomery's two free throws and a subsequent layup increased the visitors' advantage to 11-9, capitalizing on a turnover by the Bonnies. As the quarter progressed, Daemen continued to build momentum, highlighted by Kyleigh Chapman's (Canandaigua, N.Y.) jumper and Cecilia Lapertosa's (Whitesboro, N.Y.) decisive block and subsequent defensive rebound. Lapertosa's contributions on both ends of the floor helped extend the lead further, with her fast-break layup pushing the Wildcats ahead by eight. Despite a late three-pointer by Kaylee Krysztof for SBU, Joline Raposo (Tampa, Fla.) closed the quarter with a jumper, ensuring Daemen ended the first quarter leading 21-14. The Wildcats began the second quarter with a strong push, highlighted by Sophie Auer's (Lewiston, N.Y.) layup following her own offensive rebound, which set the tone early. Daemen maintained momentum with a fast-break layup by Auer, as well as significant contributions from Montgomery and Buntley, who each added to the scoring, extending the lead to 10 at 27-17. Throughout the quarter, Daemen's defense was effective, limiting SBU's opportunities while securing key defensive rebounds. A crucial three-pointer by Buntley late in the quarter helped the Wildcats widen the gap. The quarter concluded with the Wildcats leading 44-32. In the third quarter, Daemen struggled to maintain its lead as the Bonnies initiated a strong offensive push. A pivotal sequence occurred when Montgomery knocked down a 3-pointer at 8:07, momentarily extending Daemen's advantage. However, SBU responded with a series of successful plays, eventually tying the game at 56-56 with just over a minute remaining. The Wildcats' defensive efforts included key steals from Buntley and Brianna Caliri (Staten Island, N.Y.), but the Bonnies managed to regain momentum in the final seconds with a layup by Ivona Djikanovic, concluding the quarter with Daemen trailing 58-56. Daemen opened the fourth quarter with a quick layup by Lapertosa, tying the score at 58-58. Fontanillo then connected on a three-pointer, giving the Wildcats a brief lead at 61-60. Despite defensive efforts, including a block by Lapertosa, Daemen faced a series of turnovers and missed shots, allowing SBU to regain control. Midway through the quarter, Buntley hit a crucial three-pointer to level the score at 68-68. However, the Bonnies responded with a fast-break layup and free throws, which extended their advantage. Daemen struggled to close the gap as SBU capitalized on free throws, sealing a 79-68 victory.
