Women's Volleyball Closes Out Regular Season with Win Over Roberts

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Daemen University women's volleyball team closed out the regular season on the road with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-22) win over Roberts Wesleyan University this afternoon. The Wildcats are now 12-13 and 8-4 in the conference, while the Redhawks finish the year at 4-24 and 4-8 in the ECC.

Tied at five in the opening set, Daemen strung together a 7-3 run to break the tie and go up 12-8. Roberts attempted to keep most of the set close, but the Wildcats used a 13-8 run to close it out and take the set 25-16 to grab an early 1-0 lead in the match.

The Redhawks jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in set two, but Daemen clawed its way back to trail 8-7 before going on to tie things at nine. Roberts retook the lead to go in front 13-10 and then pushed its lead to 17-12. The Wildcats fought back again, this time to take a 22-19 lead using a 10-2 run before going on to win the set 25-20 and to go up 2-0 in the match.

Heading into the third set with the momentum on its side, Daemen looked to close things out as it leaped to an early 5-2 lead. Both teams traded points to find themselves tied at eight, but it did not last long as the Wildcats tallied the next three points to reclaim the lead at 11-8. Roberts attempted to keep the set close as it trailed 19-17 and then 20-19, but a 5-1 Daemen run secured a 25-20 win to take the set and match.

For the fifth time this season, the Wildcats tallied eight aces as a team. Amelia Gonzalez finished with a career- and season-high six aces.  She added five kills in the process.

Nahirka Malpica recorded eight kills to lead Daemen, while recording 11 digs for the match.

Both Payton Gaylor and Keira Mullen finished with seven kills. Mullen also registered 13 digs to pace the team.

Maddie Schamaun led all Wildcats with 14 assists, while teammate Avery Dole finished with 13.

Daemen will play in the East Coast Conference Volleyball Championship next weekend. The seeds, times, and location will be announced early next week.
