DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Paced by a huge second half, the Daemen University women's basketball team took down the Mercy University Mavericks on Sunday afternoon, 56-40. The Wildcats win their eighth straight game and improve to 16-6 overall and 12-0 in East Coast Conference play. Mercy falls to 13-8 on the year ad 7-4 in ECC games.
The Wildcats outscored Mercy 36 to 19 in the second half while shooting 54.8% from the field in the final two quarters (17-of-31). Daemen finished the game shooting 43.9% from the field after going 25-of-57 from the field. Four Wildcats finished with double-digit points in the win.
Daemen returns to Lumsden Gymnasium next weekend to host Molloy University (Friday, Feb. 14) and Queens College (Sunday, Feb. 16).
IMPACT PLAYERS
- Junior guard Claire Pikett (Holland, N.Y.) posted a double-double for the second time this season, totaling 15 points and 11 rebounds. Pikett was 7-of-15 from the field and added a triple, a team-high six assists, four steals and two blocks.
- Graduate student guard Danielle DiCintio (Somers, N.Y.) totaled 12 points after going 4-of-7 from the field, 2-of-5 beyond the arc and 2-of-2 from the charity stripe. She snagged two defensive boards and added two steals and one block.
- Freshman forward Ne'vaeh Buntley (Rochester, N.Y.) posted 11 points, six rebounds – three offensive boards – two assists and two steals.
- Junior forward Cecilia Lapertosa (Whitesboro, N.Y.) finished with 10 points after shooting 71% from the field (5-of-7) and added three assists, three steals, two blocks and two rebounds.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- It was a very low scoring first quarter for both teams. Mercy opened with a 7-2 advantage, but a five-point run by the Cats off a triple from Buntley and a layup from DiCintio tied the game up. Mercy closed the quarter with four points to lead 11-7 after the first 10 minutes of the game.
- In the first five minutes of the second, Pikett scored nine points while the Cats held Mercy to just four points as the Wildcats took the lead for the first time in the game, 16-15. The Mavericks outscored the Cats 6-4 in the final five minutes and took a 21-20 lead into the half.
- After Mercy opened the second half on an 8-6 run, the Wildcats started cruising. Daemen scored 10 straight points after going 5-of-6 from the field to jump out to a 36-29 advantage with a minute and a half left in the quarter. The Mavericks finished the quarter off scoring a layup and a free throw to bring the game within four with the Cats on top, 36-32. Daemen shot 53% from the field in the third and outscored Mercy 16-11.
- Building off their solid third quarter, the Wildcats cruised in the fourth, scoring 11 straight after the Mavs opened the scoring in the quarter. Daemen finished off the fourth outscoring Mercy 20 to 8 to take down the Mavericks 56 to 40, shooting 56% in the quarter.
GAME NOTES
- Daemen moves to 22-3 all-time against the Mavericks and win their third straight meeting between the two teams.
- The Wildcats are ranked sixth in the East Region in the latest Division II College Sports Communicators (D2CSC) regional poll.
- Daemen outrebounded the Mavericks 36 to 29 while pulling down 27 offensive boards compared to just 22 for Mercy.
- Daemen improves to 9-1 in away games this season with the win.
- This marked the final road trip doubleheader for Daemen this season. The Wildcats will play three of their four remaining regular season games at home.
