AMHERST, N.Y. – The Daemen University women's basketball team closed out the regular season with an 80-51 rout over longtime rival Roberts Wesleyan University to improve to 19-7 overall and 15-1 in East Coast Conference play while ending the Redhawks' season with a 2-21 record and 2-14 ECC record this season. Daemen shot 50.8% from the field in the win, going 31-of-61 and also shot 40.9% (9-of-22) beyond the arc against the Redhawks. Three Wildcats scored in the double figures in the victory, with sophomore guard
Sophie Auer (Lewiston, N.Y.) leading the Cats on the day with 19 points while DiCintio chipped in 17 points on her senior day and junior forward
Claire Pikett (Holland, N.Y.) added 14 points on the day.
The Wildcats, who repeated as the ECC regular season champions for the sixth consecutive season two weeks ago, will return to Lumsden Gymnasium next weekend as they play host to the 2025 ECC Championship Tournament. As the top seed in the tournament, the Cats will open up postseason play in the first semifinal game on Saturday, March 8 at 12 PM.
IMPACT PLAYERS
- Auer tied a season-high 19 points on the day after shooting 61.5% from the field (8-of-13) and added eight rebounds – four offensive boards – along with five assists and three steals on the day.
- DiCintio finished with 17 points and shot 58.3% (7-of-12) from the field and added three triples, two steals, three assists and one offensive rebound.
- Pikett totaled 14 points off five field goals and a triple while adding a team-high seven assists, a team0high five steals, four rebounds and one block on the day.
- Freshman forward Ne'vaeh Buntley (Rochester, N.Y.) led the team with 12 rebounds – seven offensive boards – and added nine points, two steals, two assists and one block.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- After the game was tied up at five points early, the Wildcats cruised to outscore Roberts 16-3 for the rest of the first quarter and took a 21-8 lead after the first 10 minutes of play. The first quarter was Steal City, USA for the Wildcats! Four different Daemen players combined for five steals in the first that led to eight points off turnovers.
- The Wildcats continued their domination in the second quarter, opening up on an 11-2 run off buckets from Pikett, DiCintio and Auer to take a 22-point lead halfway through the quarter, 32-10. Daemen closed out the second with a 39-17 lead over the Redhawks as two Wildcats – Auer and Pikett – each scored double-digits in the first half of game play.
- Roberts Wesleyan scored in the double-digits for the first time and narrowly outscored the Wildcats in the third quarter, 20-17, but Daemen remained firmly in the lead up 56-37 after three.
- Daemen laid it on Roberts from the jump in the fourth, scoring 12 of the first 14 points in the quarter and took as much as a 32-point lead over the Redhawks late in the game.
GAME NOTES
- The Wildcats are ranked second in the East Region in the latest NCAA Division II regional rankings, as released on Wednesday. The top eight teams in the region – including the tournament winners of the ECC, Northeast-10 and Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference – will advance to the NCAA Division II East Region Tournament.
- Eight of the 12 players that stepped onto the court for the Wildcats scored today.
- Daemen shot 50% or better for the second time this season. The Wildcats shot a season-high 51.9% from the field against Indiana (PA) on Jan. 3.
- Today marked the 18th game that the Wildcats allowed fewer than 60 points in a game.
