AMHERST, N.Y. – The Daemen University women's volleyball team dropped both matches on Saturday at the Wildcat Classic presented by Ellicott Hotels, first falling to Dallas Baptist University, 1-3 (23-25, 25-22, 19-25, 20-25) in the first match of the day and closing out the tournament on Saturday evening with a 0-3 (22-25, 19-25, 16-25) loss to Wayne State University. The Wildcats fall to 2-5 on the year with their third loss of the weekend.

Nahirka Malpica (Caguas, P.R.) and sophomore libero
Jarielys Giraud (Orlando, Fla.) were both named to the All-Tournament Team for their performances on the weekend.
DAEMEN 1, DBU 3
- After trading points to open up the first, DBU went on a 7-2 run off six kills to mount a 13-8 advantage and held onto their lead late into the set where they were up 23-17. From there, Daemen rattled off six of seven points off kills from Malpica and sophomore right side Payton Gaylor (Bowmanville, Ont.) to make it a one-point game, 24-23. Following a Patriot timeout, DBU won the first after a Daemen attack error, 25-23.
- The Patriots kicked off the second on a 10-5 run until the Wildcats won 11 of the next 14 points to take a 16-13 lead. Despite DBU and Daemen trading points for the rest of the set, the Wildcats never relinquished their lead and took the second, 25-22 after outhitting the Patriots 16-12 in the set. Malpica accounted for nine of Daemen's 16 kills.
- For the second straight set, DBU opened up with a massive lead, jumping out to an 11-3 advantage. Daemen tallied five kills from freshman outside hitter Keira Mullen (Farmingdale, N.J.) and Gaylor on a 7-2 run to cut the Patriot lead to within three, 13-10. From there, DBU scored six unanswered points and maintained a lead through to the end of the set despite Daemen's late comeback. The Patriots won the third, 25-19.
- After DBU jumped out to a 13-8 lead, Daemen scored seven of the next eight points off three Malpica kills and a kill from Gaylor to take the 15-14 lead. From there, each team went back and forth scoring two points consecutively up to 20 all, but the Patriots closed the set out with five unanswered points to win the fourth, 25-20, and winning the match, 3-1. The Wildcats outhit DBU 13 to 11 in the fourth, but committed 10 attack errors compared to just four from the Patriots.
For the sixth consecutive game, Malpica led the Wildcats offensively, totaling 21 kills on 43 attacks for a season-high .302 hitting percentage while tallying her third double-double of the year with 20 digs. Sophomore's
Avery Craig (Tomball, Tex.) and Gaylor each chipped in nine kills on the day. Giraud finished with 16 digs. Fifth year
Avery Dole (Summerfield, N.C.) and junior
Maddie Schamaun (Rockville, Md.) split time at setter today, with Dole totaling 22 assists, eight digs and two aces and Schamaun finishing with 21 assists and eight digs. Junior middle blocker
Kate Trueblood (Granger, Ind.) and freshman middle blocker Solé Rancy (Columbus, Ohio) each totaled three blocks, with Trueblood posting two solo blocks and two kills.
DAEMEN 0, WAYNE STATE 3
- The Warriors opened the first set on an 11-3 run, but from there, the Wildcats tallied six kills and went on a 12-3 run of their own to take a 15-14 lead over Wayne State. WSU would capitalize on seven Daemen errors through the end of the set to take the first, 25-22.
- Both teams traded points to tie the second set up at 15, but from there the Warriors closed it out with a 10-4 run to win the set, 25-19.
- After the Cats tied it up at six all, Wayne State scored six unanswered points to take a 12-6 lead. Daemen would score the next four to make it a two-point game, 12-10, but WSU rattled off seven straight to go up 19-10. The Warriors would go on to close out the set 25-16 and take the match 3-0.
Wayne State out-hit Daemen 36 to 27 on the night. Malpica led the Wildcats with eight kills on 24 attacks and added a team-high nine digs. Gaylor and freshman
Nicole Giardina (Midland, Mich.) each chipped in four kills for the Cats. Giraud finished with eight digs while Dole and Schamaun each posted nine assists.
UP NEXT
Daemen will travel to New Castle, Delaware to play in the Wildcat Regional Invitational hosted by Wilmington next weekend, Sept. 19-20, where they will face Holy Family and Franklin Pierce on Friday and Adelphi and Wilmington on Saturday.
