Wildcats Power Past Firebirds

AMHERST, N.Y. — #23 Daemen (12-2, 5-0 ECC) secured a 67-54 victory over District of Columbia (5-9, 1-3 ECC) at Lumsden Gymnasium on Friday evening. 

The Wildcats capitalized on 21 turnovers by UDC, converting them into 24 points, and dominated the boards with a 47-39 rebounding advantage. The Firebirds narrowed the gap in the third quarter with a 20-point surge but were unable to maintain momentum.

IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Ne'vaeh Buntley (Rochester, N.Y.) scored 17 points and collected nine rebounds, and dished out two assists. 
  • Kyleigh Chapman (Canandaigua, N.Y.) recorded 12 rebounds and added five steals while scoring seven points, contributing significantly on both ends of the court. 
  • Joline Raposo (Tampa, Fla.) tallied 10 points and made two steals, showing efficiency from beyond the arc. 
  • Sophie Auer (Lewiston, N.Y.) also contributed 12 points, converting five of her 10 field goal attempts.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Daemen began the first quarter with strong defensive pressure, leading to early success. Buntley opened the scoring with a 3-pointer at 9:21, assisted by Shyla Montgomery (Brockton, Mass.). The Wildcats' defense was effective, forcing eight turnovers from UDC and capitalizing with points in the paint. Auer scored a layup and converted a free throw at 2:26 to regain the lead as Daemen ended the quarter ahead 15-10.
  • The Wildcats took control in the second quarter with a strong defensive presence, tallying six steals and converting turnovers into fast-break points. Buntley scored multiple layups, while Claire Pikett (Holland, N.Y.) added a critical 3-pointer at 5:35 to extend their lead. Raposo contributed with consecutive 3-pointers and free throws, pushing the home team further ahead. The Wildcats outscored UDC 21-12 in the quarter, leading to a 36-22 lead at halftime.
  • Daemen maintained its lead in the third quarter with a key run sparked by Buntley's 3-pointer at 9:01. Chapman contributed effectively, securing offensive rebounds and scoring twice in the paint, pushing the Wildcats' lead. The quarter concluded with Daemen ahead 51-42.
  • The Wildcats held on to their lead in the fourth, highlighted by Pikett's layup at 8:09, extending their advantage to 55–42. Auer's 3-pointer at 7:09 further solidified Daemen's momentum, pushing the score to 58–42. Montgomery sank a crucial 3-pointer at 2:35, making the score 65–49 as Daemen took the win. 
GAME NOTES
  • Chapman's 12 rebounds, five steals, and four assists marked career highs. 
  • The Wildcats led the entire 40 minutes of the contest.
  • Daemen forced 21 UDC turnovers and scored 24 points off them.
  • The points in the paint finished in the Wildcats' favor at 30-26
  • The Wildcats' defense logged 14 steals and four blocks in the contest.
