BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Daemen University women's volleyball team fell at crosstown rival D'Youville University 0-3 (17-25, 18-25, 20-25) on Sunday. The Wildcats were held to a .050 hitting percentage and 26 kills, while the Saints hit .238 with 39 kills. With the loss, Daemen moves to 10-8 on the year and 2-2 in East Coast Conference action, while D'Youville improves to 10-9 overall and 2-2 in ECC play as well.
D'Youville jumped ahead 4-0, but the Wildcats collected kills from
Audrey Johnson (Mequon, Wisc.),
Jolie Faw (Williamsburg, Va.) and Amelia Gonzalez (Juana Diaz, P.R.) to stay within 12-8. The Saints maintained separation and later scored four straight to move in front, 19-11. The Wildcats put together a three-point push with kills from
Mina Faw (Williamsburg, Va.) and Johnson to cut the score to 21-15, but D'Youville closed the set 25-17.
The Wildcats and Saints traded points early, with D'Youville taking a 9-8 lead and later pulling away to 12-8. The Saints would go on to stretch the lead to 20-14. A kill from Johnson's kill and a block by Gonzalez-
Payton Gaylor (Bowmanville, Ont.) got the Wildcats within 20-16, but the Saints remained firmly in the lead and took the second set, 25-18.
The Wildcats opened the third set with points from a
Mina Faw kill and a D'Youville attack error, then stayed in front through a 9-7 lead after a Johnson kill and an ace from
Jarielys Giraud (Orlando, Fla.). D'Youville moved ahead with a four-point stretch, 12-9, and after Faw's kill made it 12-10, the home team scored the next six points to build an 18-10 advantage. The Wildcats later got an ace from
Peyton Lowes (Northville, Mich.) and blocks involving Gaylor and Gonzalez, but D'Youville reached set point at 24-16. The Wildcats extended the set with four straight points, including two Johnson kills, before D'Youville closed it 25-20 to hand Daemen their second ECC loss of the season.
IMPACT PLAYERS
- Once again, the Wildcats were led offensively by Johnson who was the lone Daemen player to reach double-digit kills, finishing with 10 kills on 26 attempts while adding five digs.
- Gaylor posted a team and season-high six block assists on the day, adding three kills and two digs.
- Mina Faw finished with six kills and just one error on 13 attempts to hit .385 in the match.
- Giraud totaled 11 digs, three assists and one ace.
- Maddie Schamaun (Rockville, Md.) finished with 12 assists, three digs and one ace, while Lowes totaled 11 assists, one ace and two digs.
- Gonzalez finished with four blocks.
